Eberhard Umbach
Eberhard Umbach (born April 12, 1948 in Bad Lauterberg ) is a German physicist in the field of experimental surface physics and a science manager.
Life
He studied physics at the Technical University of Munich and received his doctorate in 1980 with distinction. After a research stay in the USA, he also completed his habilitation in 1986 at the Technical University of Munich.
Umbach was a professor at the University of Stuttgart from 1987 to 1993 and professor for experimental physics at the University of Würzburg from 1993 to 2007 .
From 2006 to 2008 he was President of the German Physical Society .
In 2007 he became chairman of the board of the Karlsruhe Research Center (FZK). After the FZK merged with the University of Karlsruhe to form the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), he became its President on October 1, 2009. In October 2013, the KIT adopted Eberhard Umbach into retirement.
Until he left KIT, Umbach was also Vice President of the Helmholtz Association for the energy research area.
Umbach is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech) and a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen .
