Eberhard Winkler (born July 31, 1955 in Munich ) is a German Finnougrist .

Life

Winkler studied German , Finnish-Ugrian and Scandinavian studies at the universities of Munich and Helsinki from 1977 to 1984 . In 1984 he received his master's -degree, 1987, he was with a thesis on comparative syntax of German and Finnish to Dr. phil. PhD.

From 1987 to 1990 he was a research assistant in a DFG project of Wolfgang Schlachter on Sami , then from 1990 research assistant at the Institute for Finno-Ugric Studies at the University of Munich. Here he completed his habilitation in 1996 with a thesis on Krewinian , an extinct Baltic Finnish language . After a transitional phase as senior assistant and project employee, he was appointed to the chair of Finnish-Ugric Studies at the Georg-August University in Göttingen in 2002 .

Winkler is a member of numerous scientific organizations and has been Executive President of the Societas Uralo-Altaica since 2006 .

research

Winkler's research focus is on the smaller Baltic Finnish languages, for which he has published numerous older sources. He has presented relevant research in particular on Krewini and Livonian . In addition, he has also written important works on the medium-sized Finno-Ugric languages ​​such as Udmurt and Mari .
