Eberhard von Kurowski (General, 1895)

Eberhard von Kurowski (born September 10, 1895 in Stettin ; † September 11, 1957 in Stanzach ) was a German lieutenant general in World War II .

Life

When the First World War broke out on August 2, 1914, Kurowski joined the 2nd Guard Regiment on foot in the Prussian Army as a flag junior . Until the end of October 115 he was promoted to lieutenant . For his behavior during the war, he was awarded both classes of the Iron Cross and the Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzoller with Swords. After the Compiègne armistice , Kurowski joined the Freikorps "von Schauroth" in 1919 and fought in the Baltic States and in the Eastern Border Guard . He was then accepted into the Reichswehr in April 1920 and completed general staff training . In the Wehrmacht Kurowski served in the staff of the 21st Infantry Division , as Ia in the XXI. Army Corps and in 1940 became Chief of the General Staff of the XXXX. Panzer Corps, renamed the 2nd Panzer Army from May 1941 . On January 23, 1942, he received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross . In 1943 Kurowski became the commander of the 110th Infantry Division . During the collapse of Army Group Center as a result of the Soviet operation Bagration in 1944, he was taken prisoner of war.

He was one of the fifty German generals who, in Soviet captivity, signed the appeal of the 50 generals to the people and the Wehrmacht on December 8, 1944, calling on the German population and army to separate from the Nazi leadership and to end the war.

In 1947 Kurowski was sentenced to 25 years in a labor camp as a war criminal in Gomel ; In 1955 he was released from captivity to Germany.
