Eberhard von Neisse

Eberhard von Neisse (* around 1250 in Neisse ; † May 25, 1326 in Heilsberg ) was Bishop of Warmia .

Life

Eberhard came from a middle-class family from Neisse. His nephew Johann († 1345) was provost of Warmia. It is not known when Eberhard was ordained a priest and when he became provost of Warmia. In any case, since 1284 he was the notary of the local bishop Heinrich I. Fleming. From 1287 to 1301 he was pastor of Braunsberg and from 1288 canon and one year later canon of Warmia. In 1290 it is documented in a land prescription in the Mehlsack area .

After the death of Bishop Heinrich Fleming on July 15, 1300, Eberhard von Neisse was elected as his successor. Since the Diocese of Warmia was a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Riga , the Riga Cathedral Chapter confirmed the choice and at the same time gave him permission to be ordained by a bishop of his choice. Although the Archbishop of Riga, Isarnus von Fontiano, who has been in office since 1300, protested in March 1302 against the confirmation given by the cathedral chapter, he was unsuccessful, in any case no confirmation was given.

Eberhard campaigned for the colonization of his diocese with settlers from Neisse. He was supported by his brother Arnold. Settlements took place in Heilsberg in 1308, in Frauenburg in 1310 , in Mehlsack in 1312, in Wormditt in 1316 and in Guttstadt in 1325 . He gave these cities appropriate location certificates.

Bishop Eberhard died on May 25, 1326 in Heilsberg. His body was buried in the Frauenburg Cathedral .
