Ed Sparrowhawk

Edgar G. "Ed" Sperber (born March 23, 1937 ) is a German jazz and entertainment musician ( tenor , alto saxophone , clarinet , flute , vocals , conductor ).

Sperber, who grew up in Schweinfurt , learned to play the violin from the age of 9, and at the age of 13 received clarinet lessons. Already at the age of 17 he performed in local clubs of the US Army, where he discovered jazz. He worked in ball bearing production in Schweinfurt. In 1961 he founded ballbearing dixielanders with a few work colleagues . With this band he performed at the German Amateur Jazz Festival in 1961 and 1962 and was honored as the best soloist in each case. In 1963 he founded his first professional band and then studied with Ernst Flackus at the State Conservatory in Würzburg . From 1967 he toured Sweden, Denmark, Austria, Switzerland and Italy with the Ed Sperber sextet. From 1971 to 1977 he was a member of the Ambros Seelos Orchestra , with which he undertook four tours to Asia and performed in most European countries. In October 1977, Bayerischer Rundfunk brought him to the Rundfunk-Tanzorchester Nürnberg , which he directed under his own name for twenty years and with which he took part in numerous radio productions. He also played kaleidoscope with his jazz combo . Since 1978 he has also taught at the Alexander von Humboldt Gymnasium and the Celtis Gymnasium in Schweinfurt. Since 1985 he has worked as a lecturer for the big band and ensemble subject at the University of Music Würzburg , where he was appointed professor in 2001.

Sperber made numerous albums. Thomas and Johannes Fink and Werner Schmitt belong to his quartet .
