Nuremberg Dance Orchestra

The Nürnberger Tanzorchester (NTO) was from 1949 to 1994 an orchestra of the Bavarian Radio Studio Nürnberg, today Studio Franken .

history

The Nuremberg studio employed an in-house ensemble as early as 1949. The Kurt Edelhagen Orchestra was signed under Willy Spilling , and the Franconian State Orchestra (now the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra ) and the Kurt Illing Orchestra played in the Nuremberg studio . After Kurt Edelhagen's departure, the music department of the Studio Nuremberg of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation commissioned Josef Niessen in 1951 to set up and lead the NTO Nuremberg Dance Orchestra.

In 1952 he succeeded Kurt Edelhagen and founded the Nuremberg Dance Orchestra as a new studio orchestra. In addition, the Steff Lindemann dance orchestra and at times the Silvan Koopmann Big Band were available to Studio Nuremberg . However, because the Nuremberg studios were too small for the ensembles in the early years, the radio people sometimes had to switch to gyms, theaters or night clubs for their productions, where they played and recorded until the early hours of the morning.

In the following years, members of the NTO produced either in the BR-Studiopark on Wallensteinstrasse Studio Franken, or in the Meistersingerhalle with the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra (Fränkisches Landesorchester) light music and jazz, dance and folk music in numerous ensembles.

In 1965, constant budget cuts called the continued existence of the NTO into question. Heinz Maiwald (drummer in the NTO since 1965) persuaded Steff Lindemann to give up his band and to take over the management of the NTO for public appearances. This ensured the continued existence of the orchestra.

In 1977 Ed Sperber took over the management of the orchestra under his name. This was followed by guest performances and galas in major German cities with orchestral accompaniment by various artists.

The BR music department discontinued the Franconian NTO orchestra around 1994 in favor of other activities. An attempt by the Nuremberg-based Silvan Koopmann University Big Band to consolidate a jazz orchestra as a Franconian flagship in the Nuremberg studio failed. Some of the musicians switched to the Thilo Wolf Big Band , which firmly re-established the BR television series "SWING-IT" with the Big Band genre. Other aspiring Franconian professional musicians play today either in the Sunday Night Orchestra cross-over with the Nuremberg Philharmonic or in the Federal Jazz Orchestra .
