Edgar Rabsch (organist)

Edgar Rabsch (born August 5, 1928 in Tiefenfurt near Bunzlau ; † July 17, 1990 in Ulm ) was a German organist , choir director and composer . In order to distinguish his works from a namesake, he usually used the addition “Tiefenfurt” in brackets.

Life

Rabsch came into contact with the singing movement through Richard Poppe (Breslau) . From 1947 to 1951 he studied church music in Esslingen am Neckar with Karl Ludwig Gerok (the organist of the Stuttgart collegiate church ) and with Hans-Arnold Metzger . Studies with Siegfried Reda , Marie-Claire Alain and Cor Kee followed . From 1951 to 1972 he was cantor and organist at the collegiate church in Backnang . In 1963 he was appointed church music director.

From 1972 until his death, Rabsch succeeded Hans Jakob Haller as church music director at the Ulm Minster and conducted the Münsterkantorei and the Ulm Oratorio Choir . In 1979 he received a teaching position for organ and organ improvisation at the State University of Music in Trossingen ; In 1986 he was appointed professor.

In 1980 Rabsch was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit.

As a composer, Rabsch wrote numerous choral pieces, cantatas and organ works. He created the arrangement of the organ in the Konrad Sam Chapel in Ulm Minster.

In 1963 Edgar Rabsch founded the "Singing and Music-Making Week for Young People", which takes place annually in Lorch Monastery even after his death.
