Edmund von Bruiningk

Edmund von Bruiningk (born July 26, 1846 in Dorpat , † February 9, 1885 in Meran ) came from Estonia and was an art historian . His main work consisted in the collection of "material for the new catalog of the Hermitage", which was published in 1891, together with A. Somoff.

Life

Edmund von Bruiningk attended the Schmidtsche Anstalt from 1859 to 1865, which later became the Fellin high school . At the University of Tartu , he studied 1866-1871 jurisprudence , then he went to 1872 on a study trip that him through Germany , the Switzerland and Italy led. From 1872 he stayed in Riga , moved to Saint Petersburg and developed into an art historian. From 1874 to 1876 he was an attaché with a special area of ​​responsibility and from 1878 to 1884 he was assistant to the curator of the picture gallery in the imperial Hermitage , which he later headed. Scientific and art-historical studies took him to Dresden and Paris (1875–1876), and in the 1880s to Sweden , Denmark , Holland , Belgium , Italy and Germany. In terms of health, he had been severely restricted in his work since 1881 due to a lung disease and was dismissed from his offices in 1884. He died in 1885 without any descendants.

Origin and family

The Bruiningk family was a German-Baltic noble family. His father was Ludolph August Freiherr von Bruiningk, who was a district judge in Dorpat . He was married to the future Princess Marie von Lieven from 1826 . Edmund's brother was the historian Hermann von Bruiningk (1849–1927). Edmund von Bruiningk was unmarried.
