Eduard Bohl

Eduard Böhl (born November 18, 1836 in Hamburg , † January 24, 1903 in Vienna ) was a German Reformed theologian .

Life

Böhl grew up as the son of a Lutheran merchant and a Roman Catholic mother. From 1846 to 1854 he attended the Johanneum in Hamburg , then the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Berlin . There he started studying theology, but after just one semester he switched to the university in Halle . In 1858 he continued his studies in Erlangen . In 1861 Böhl became a private lecturer for the Old Testament in Basel . There he accepted the Reformed Confession and completed his habilitation. From 1864 to 1899 Böhl taught in Vienna as a professor of systematic theology .

His main work Dogmatics is considered a comprehensive German-language summary of the Reformed doctrine. Böhl was an enthusiastic admirer of Martin Luther , which is why his work is also recognized by Lutherans. His dogmatics was recognized by Karl Barth, among others . Böhl was the son-in-law of the great Reformed theologian and pastor of the Dutch Reformed Congregation in Elberfeld, Hermann Friedrich Kohlbrügge .
