Eduard Ferdinand Geiseler

Eduard Ferdinand Geiseler (born September 21, 1781 in Stettin , † April 6, 1837 in Danzig ) was a German pharmacist , doctor and botanist . As a botanist he dealt in particular with the genus Croton from the milkweed family. His botanical author's abbreviation is " Geiseler ".

Life

Born as the son of a Stettin merchant, he began an apprenticeship as a pharmacist in the Zitelmannsche Apotheke in his hometown in 1797 and moved to the court pharmacy in 1802 (the court pharmacist was Johann Carl Friedrich Meyer at the time ). In 1802 he went to Copenhagen , where he began to study medicine, which he continued in 1804 at the University of Göttingen and in 1805 at the University of Halle . He received his doctorate in Halle in 1807 and passed his examination in Berlin in 1808.

He went to Gdansk , where he worked as a doctor at the Gdansk City Hospital . During the French period he also worked from 1811 to 1814 as an assistant doctor at the French military hospitals in Danzig. In 1813 he distinguished himself in the treatment of a hospital fever epidemic . In 1820 he became head of the city hospital, but resigned this office in 1826 because he could not implement his suggestions for improving the hospital. He then worked as a doctor in his own practice. Since 1812 he dealt with the treatment method of homeopathy , which he also used in his practice.

As a botanist, Geiseler dealt in particular with the genus Croton from the milkweed family. These plants were the subject of his doctoral thesis, Crotonis monographiam, submitted in 1807 . He provided the first description of several species. The Geiseleria section of the Croton genus is named after him.

Honors

In 1816 Geiseler received the title of Medical Councilor , in 1833 he was awarded the Red Eagle Order, 4th class .
