Live and act

Eduard Hügel was born on July 29, 1816 in the city of Győr, the son of a printer. According to various sources, he came to Vienna either as an eight-year-old or as a 14-year-old. Here, at the discretion of his father, he subsequently joined the Wallishausser bookstore, which is considered to be distinguished as an apprentice . In the following years he traveled all over the empire and lived in Leipzig for several years . In the 1840s he returned to Vienna, where he established himself as a bookseller and publisher. The Jasper, Hügel & Manz bookstore , of which he was one of three partners, was founded in 1842 in Vienna's Herrengasse and was merged with Huber & Lahme in later years .

The bookstore became particularly popular with writers and literary lovers. Above all, the Hungarian population of Vienna counted among the bookstore's customers, as it was the only one that also took into account the Hungarian literature market. The men of the 1848 movement in Austria-Hungary in particular frequented this bookstore. Hill, who had a fiery nature, was drawn into the general movement at this time. Liberal and popular, he is said to have contributed a lot to the spread of liberal ideas. With the writer Julius Seydlitz (also written Julius Seidlitz ; 1815–1857), who was a customer of the bookstore, Hügel often discussed the chances of founding a Volksblatt in Vienna. After various difficulties had been overcome, the first edition of the Wiener Stadt- und Vorstadt-Zeitung appeared on April 1, 1855, of which Eduard Hügel was editor-in-chief and publisher.

In all these years Johann Huber († 1901) was a loyal companion on the hill side; Huber started as an intern at Hügel in 1851 and worked as an assistant until 1869. When Hügel became the sole owner of the bookstore, he was its first assistant from 1869 to 1877. It was also Huber who - together with Alfred Josef Lahme - took over the business of Hügel in September 1877 as one of two partners and renamed the bookstore and the publishing house to Huber & Lahme . At this point in time, the predecessor company had slipped into insolvency , from which the duo Huber & Lahme brought it out again. Huber was then a partner until he left the company in 1895.

In 1863 the Wiener Stadt- und Vorstadt-Zeitung was renamed the Konstitutionelle Vorstadt-Zeitung . Four years later, Hügel managed to move into the Vienna City Council, in which he was represented until 1877 and represented liberal views. On January 1st, 1871, the 54-year-old father of Gustav , who made a name for himself as a member of the Vienna Ice Skating Club and was a one-time European champion, three-time world champion, four-time vice-European and two-time vice-world champion, became the father of Gustav . Eduard Hügel is - like Fedor Mamroth - a sponsor of the writer and journalist Hans Bergler , who published under the pseudonym Ottokar Tann-Bergler . With the support of the two, after completing his studies, Bergler received jobs in several Austrian newspapers.

From the age of 70 onwards, the hill that had previously been described as healthy began to degrade noticeably. Marked by numerous heart cramps and anxiety, Hill, bedridden for weeks, died on December 13, 1887 at around 9:45 p.m. in the presence of his family at home in Vienna. The funeral took place on December 15, 1887 with the participation of numerous writers and journalists. Until his death, Hügel was in the administration of the Steyrermühl paper mill and publishing company .
