Eduard Nikolajewitsch Uspenski ( Russian Эдуард Николаевич Успенский ; born December 22, 1937 in Yegoryevsk , Moscow Oblast ; † August 14, 2018 in Moscow ) was a Soviet and Russian children's writer and screenwriter. He has created internationally known figures such as Cheburashka and the crocodile Gena .

biography

After graduating from school, Uspensky began studying engineering at the Moscow Aviation Institute . He completed this in 1961. He started working as an author while still a student. Originally published Uspenski mainly scripts for cartoons and humorous works, the latter partly in collaboration with the famous satirist Arkady Arkanow . A little later, Uspenski wrote several children's poems, which were published in the renowned cultural magazine Literaturnaja Gazeta , among others .

In 1966, Uspenski published his first larger children's book, Krokodil Gena and his friends , which is about the friends Krokodil Gena and Tscheburaschka and is still one of his most successful works to this day. Several sequels to the story followed over the next few years, including children's plays such as Tscheburaschka and his friends (1970) or Crocodile Gena on vacation (1974). A large part of Uspenski's work, however, take up screenplays for cartoons, including several Cheburashka films such as Crocodile Gena (1969) or Cheburashka Goes to School (1983).

In the 1980s he also wrote a new series of children's books that were filmed in a cartoon series called the Prostokwaschino Trilogy . This series is also one of his most famous works. By the 1990s, Uspenski wrote a total of over 60 scripts - most of them for cartoons, but also for two feature films. He has also created several successful children's television shows. Some of his children's books, including Crocodile Gena and Friends , have been translated into up to 25 languages.

Uspensky lived in Moscow . He ran his own book publisher and was also a board member of the political party Bürgererkraft .

The author died after suffering from cancer in 2018 in Putschkowo, Troitsk administrative district (Moscow) .
