Eduard Palla (born September 3, 1864 in Kremsier , † April 7, 1922 in Graz ) was an Austrian botanist who was known for his work on the sedge family ( Cyperaceae ).

Life

Eduard Palla graduated from the state high school in his native town and from 1883 studied natural sciences at the University of Vienna with Anton Kerner von Marilaun , Julius Wiesner , Joseph Böhm , Hans Molisch and Richard Wettstein . In 1887 he received his doctorate with the dissertation “Contributions to the anatomy and systematics of the Cyperaceae”. phil. PhD. In doing so, he worked out the sedge family of plants based on the anatomical analysis founded by Ludwig Radlkofer . He then worked as a demonstrator at Kerner von Marilaun.

In the autumn of 1888, Palla moved to the Botanical Institute of the University of Graz as assistant to Gottlieb Haberlandt . In his habilitation thesis from 1891 he dealt with the anatomy of plants : "Observations on cell membrane formation on protoplasts deprived of cell nuclei". Until February 1901 he made many scientific excursions , sometimes together with Ernst Haeckel , of which he gave more than lectures in the lecture hall. In 1901 Palla received the title of associate professor.

In 1901/02 he went on a study trip to Buitenzorg on Java and examined Cyperaceae and tropical mushrooms there. In 1909 he was appointed associate professor, in 1913 he was appointed full professor of botany at the University of Graz.

His first major work, with which he also became known outside the scientific and academic field, was the "Atlas of the Alpine Flora". Palla was commissioned to reissue the work published by the German and Austrian Alpine Association , with which he systematically explored the alpine region botanically, through the mediation of the geologist Eduard Richter . The five-volume work was published by Lindauer in Munich in 1897; the color plates based on photographs of nature and originals were by Anton Hartinger .

In 1897 he published in particular on the flora of Styria and the Carpathian Mountains, and with his herbarium evidence he enlarged the herbarium of the University of Graz considerably. He studied tallophytes , including mushrooms, algae, and liverworts, and cultivated them for study purposes. He dealt with the cell structure and growth of cryptogams , namely algae, fungi and liverworts. He described the mushroom Pilobolus heterosporus for the first time and revised the species of the genus in 1900. In the course of further work he determined that the nucleated parts of thallophyte cells of the protoplasm in adolescence have different "morphological values". This is why they u. a. can secrete a cell wall.

Above all, however, Palla dealt with the systematics of the Cyperaceae, and published several studies on this: in 1888 on the genera Caustis , in 1896 on Eriophorum and in 1897 on Trichophorum . In 1888 he redefined the genus Scirpus and two years later created a new classification of the Scirpus species in Central Europe.

Palla's main work is the treatment of the Cyperaceae in Wilhelm Daniel Joseph Koch's “Synopsis of the German and Swiss Flora”, which was based on his own research and with which he created three new genera: Bolboschoenus maritimus , Duval-jouvea and Acorellus .

In addition, he helped shape the exsicates collection of Johann Andreas Kneucker . In his last study he dealt with sedge grasses of the Caucasus . He described several new species and genera.
