Eduard Stadelmann

Eduard Stadelmann (born September 24, 1920 in Graz , † September 14, 2006 in St. Paul , Minnesota ) was an Austrian botanist of Swiss origin. He conducted research on plant physiology and plant cell physiology. From 1964 he taught in the USA .

Life

After attending the Lichtenfels grammar school in Graz (matriculation examination 1939), he studied botany at the universities of Graz and Innsbruck and was awarded a doctorate in 1953 in Innsbruck. phil. PhD. In 1957 he completed his habilitation at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) in the field of plant physiology and cell physiology. After working as a visiting professor at the University of Oran , he became an assistant professor at the University of Minnesota (Department of Plant Pathology and Physiology) in 1964 . In 1972 he became full professor at the Department of Horticultural Science and Landscape Architecture and retired in 1991.

The focus of his research was on the field of plant physiology and cell physiology of plants, in particular he carried out fundamental research on the permeability of plant protoplasts and cell membranes , which in practice are particularly important for irrigation and the rational use of fertilizers in agriculture . In addition, his work on the Kombucha tea mushroom, first published in 1961 , which includes extensive documentation of the entire specialist literature published on this topic and has since been translated into several languages, became known internationally to a general audience beyond his specialist area.
