Eduard von Strahl grew up at Altenlack Castle in Altenlack (Stara Loka), today a district of Škofja Loka , which his father had bought in 1819 from his brother-in-law Josef Dembscher (Jožef Demšar). When his father Friedrich Anselm died in 1821, his uncle Franz Xaver Demšar (1790–1846), Appellationsrat in Vienna, became his guardian. Strahl studied law at the University of Vienna from 1835 to 1839 and then worked as a judge at regional and district courts in Laibach , Gorizia and Treffen before he retired in 1868. In 1873 he was raised to the Austrian knighthood.

In retirement, von Strahl worked as a writer. He wrote poems, politically committed texts, especially writings on arts and crafts. As the son of a German father and a Slovenian mother, he was interested in the Slovenian history and language of his homeland, Carniola , and translated poems by the Slovenian national poet France Prešeren . Politically, he was considered a liberal and was active as a supporter of the German constitutional party in Carniola.

He gained particular importance through his collection of paintings, handicrafts and antiques, some of which he inherited from his uncle, at his Altenlack Castle, which soon became the most important art collection in Krain. Over the years he increased this through numerous purchases from the Italian antiques dealer Alessandro Volpi, through his relationships with artists and friends who are interested in art, as well as through collecting objects in parsonages, churches and from private collections. His son Karl (1850–1929), who was also a lawyer, inherited the collection and continued to run it. After the First World War, the government confiscated the collection and ordered it to be inventoried. With the help of the journalist and collector Ante Gaber, Karl von Strahl compiled an inventory catalog (partly published by Janko Polec in 1930) in which he published further data in addition to the collection history, making the catalog an important source for provenance research. After Karl von Strahl's death in 1929, the Narodna Galerija ( Slovenian National Gallery ), the Narodni muzej and the Etnografski muzej, all in Ljubljana, acquired large parts of the art collection.
