Edward Banks (Legal Counsel)
Edward Banks (born February 28, 1796 in Hamburg , † December 17, 1851 in Veytaux ) was a Hamburg diplomat and politician .
Banks came from an English family that had lived in Hamburg since around 1660. As a schoolboy he took part in the wars of liberation in the Hanseatic Legion from 1813 to 1815 . He then studied law and political science in Göttingen , Berlin and Jena . In Jena he was promoted to Dr. iur. PhD . He was enrolled as a lawyer in Hamburg on October 8, 1819 . In 1821 he became the district and court actuary in Ritzebüttel . On May 1, 1826, Banks took up a new position as Senate Secretary in Hamburg.
on February 17, 1837 he was elected to the Senate Syndicate and then represented Hamburg diplomatically abroad. After the death of Karl Sieveking , Banks took over the management of Hamburg's foreign affairs in 1847. In 1847 he was also the Free Cities' Bundestag envoy . After the revolution of 1848 he was sent by the Bundestag as envoy to London ; and became envoy to the Reich . He was also active as envoy in Copenhagen , as well as in the pre-parliament in Frankfurt am Main , in the Princely College in Berlin, in the Erfurt parliament and at the Dresden conferences . After the Federal Assembly was restored, he resumed his seat. He died while on a spa stay in Switzerland. He was married to Beata Cecilia (1799–1869), a daughter of Johann Heinrich Bartels . His son was Edward Banks .
In 1842 Banksstrasse was named in his honor for his services to the development of Hammerbrooks
