Edward E. Harlow

Edward Everett Harlow (* 1952 ) is an American molecular biologist , geneticist and oncologist .

Harlow earned a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Oklahoma at Norman , Oklahoma and a Ph.D. at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund in London .

Harlow was Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Pharmacology at Harvard Medical School and was Associate Director of the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute , both of which are based in Boston , Massachusetts . Prior to that, he was scientific director at the Massachusetts General Hospital Cancer Center , also in Boston, and at the National Cancer Institute .

In 2009, Harlow took on the role of Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at Constellation Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge , Massachusetts .

Harlow - partly based on the work of Arnold J. Levine - contributed fundamental insights into the interaction between oncogenes and anti-oncogenes on the one hand and other cellular proteins on the other. He discovered the interaction between the gene product of the retinoblastoma gene - the retinoblastoma protein - and viral transformation proteins, thus opening up the research area of ​​the connection between oncogenesis and control of the cell cycle . Another focus of Harlow is epigenetics .
