Edward Quinn

The Irish photographer Edward Quinn (born February 20, 1920 in Dublin ; † January 30, 1997 in Altendorf , Switzerland ) lived and worked on the Côte d'Azur since the 1950s , where stars, managers, Nobility and artists met.

Life

Born in Dublin in 1920, Quinn served as an aircraft navigator in the Royal Air Force during World War II . After the war he worked for the French airline Chartair, then as a musician and photographer until he finally moved to the Riviera in southern France, to Nice , Saint Tropez , Cannes and also to Monte Carlo . There he got up close and personal with the stars as a photographer.

Quinn's sensitive photos of " celebrities " such as Brigitte Bardot , Sophia Loren , Grace Kelly , Marlon Brando , Cary Grant , Aristotle Onassis and many more date from this time . 1951 began his friendship with Picasso , which lasted until the artist's death in 1973. During these twenty years he produced an extensive photographic work on Picasso, which was reflected in numerous exhibitions, books and films. From the 1960s onwards, Quinn concentrated increasingly on working with artists, including Max Ernst , Alexander Calder , Francis Bacon , Salvador Dalí and David Hockney . A similarly intense relationship as with Picasso had connected him with Georg Baselitz since the late eighties . From 1992 until his death in 1997, Quinn lived near Zurich with his Swiss wife Gret. Quinn's nephew and heir Wolfgang Frei founded the Edward Quinn Archive AG in 2012 and looks after the extensive collections.
