Sir Edwyn Sinclair Alexander-Sinclair GCB , MVO (* 1865 in Malta ; † November 13, 1945 ) was a British admiral in the First World War .

career

Edwyn Sinclair Alexander-Sinclair joined the British Navy in 1879 as a 14-year-old cadet , he was promoted to lieutenant in 1890 and commander in January 1901 . From February 1902 to January 1904 he was in command of the destroyer HMS Albatross and then until 1905 in command of the protected cruiser HMS Surprise . He then received his promotion to captain and command of the Royal Naval College, Osborne , where he remained until 1908. From May 1911 to August 1913 he was in command of HMS Victory , the flagship of the fleet commander in Portsmouth .

At the outbreak of World War Alexander-Sinclair commander was the Dreadnought - battleship HMS Temeraire . In 1915 he was commodore and commander of the 1st Light Cruiser Squadron, on the flagship HMS Galatea . The Galatea was the first British ship to sight German ships at the beginning of the Skagerrak Battle on May 31, 1916 and to open fire; she then got into a battle with the Kleiner Kreuz SMS Elbing and had to withdraw after receiving several hits.

In 1917 he was promoted to Rear Admiral and soon thereafter appointed in command of the 6th Light Cruiser Squadron on HMS Cardiff . In November 1918, he and the Cardiff were given the honor of leading the German ocean-going fleet , which was to be interned in Scapa Flow until a peace treaty was signed, to Rosyth . Only weeks later, he and his squadron were sent to the Baltic Sea to support the independence movements of the Estonian and Latvian people against the armed forces of Soviet Russia . His squadron captured two Russian destroyers , which were then handed over to Estonia , and then blocked the Russian fleet in Kronstadt until it was relieved on January 6, 1919 by the 1st Kreuzer Squadron under Rear Admiral Walter Cowan .

Alexander-Sinclair subsequently served as Admiral-Superintendent of Portsmouth Dockyard from 1920 to 1922 , from 1922 to 1924 as Vice Admiral as Chief of the 1st Battle Squadron of the Atlantic Fleet , from 1925 to 1926 as Commander-in-Chief of the China Station , and finally for promotion to Admiral from 1927 to 1930 as Commander-in-Chief The Nore .
