Edzard Visser

Edzard Visser (born March 15, 1954 in Hage ) is a German classical philologist and high school teacher.

Life

Edzard Visser was born in East Frisia; his family comes from the island of Norderney . After graduating from high school, Visser studied classical philology, ancient history and philosophy at the universities of Würzburg , Cincinnati , Mainz and Basel . After graduating, he worked as a research assistant at the University of Basel for three years. He then completed his legal clerkship in Speyer and worked as a high school teacher from 1987, first at the Werner-Heisenberg-Gymnasium Neuwied , from 1988 at the Görres-Gymnasium in Koblenz. In addition to his teaching activities, Visser took over the trainee training in ancient languages ​​at the study seminar in Koblenz.

In 2001 Visser became headmaster of the Görres-Gymnasium. In this function, he transformed the school into a mathematical and scientific excellence cluster ( MINT-EC school), brokered its membership in the youth debated school association , and turned it into a pilot school in the Latin plus project , in which Latin and English are paralleled in the 5th grade. In 2007 Visser moved to the Pedagogical Center in Bad Kreuznach as a speaker , where he designed the competence orientation for the Rhineland-Palatinate framework plans in the field of ancient languages. Since November 4th, 2008 Visser has been the headmaster of the Megina-Gymnasium Mayen .

In addition to his commitment to school, Visser is still connected to the University of Basel, where he obtained his doctorate in 1986 (reviewers were Joachim Latacz and Arbogast Schmitt , co-referee Josef Delz ) and completed his habilitation in 1996 . As a professor with teaching assignment, he holds lectures, seminars and exercises at the university. Since his doctorate, his main research focus has been the Iliad , to which he dedicated several monographs and articles. In addition, he deals with the pedagogical dimension of Latin lessons. Visser was and is involved in several associations and working groups; Among other things, he was a board member of the Rhineland-Palatinate Classical Philology Association .
