Ehud Netzer (also Ehud Netser or Ehud Nezer ; * May 13, 1934 in Jerusalem ; † October 28, 2010 there ) was an Israeli archaeologist and construction researcher .

Life

Netzer studied architecture at the Technion in Haifa from 1954 to 1958 and then worked in an architecture office until 1962. He then received his doctorate from 1972 to 1978 at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem . In his dissertation he dealt with the palaces of Herod the Great in Jericho and the Herodium . In 1981 he began teaching at the Hebrew University and was appointed professor in 1990.

He began his practical archaeological career between 1963 and 1965 as assistant to Jigael Jadin during the excavations in Masada . From 1972 - with interruptions from 1987 to 1997 - he was involved in excavations at the Herodium fortress. Further excavations led him to Jericho, Caesarea Maritima , Banyas and Sepphoris , where he uncovered the ancient synagogue . Netzer's possible discovery of the grave of Herod the Great in Herodion in May 2007 attracted special international attention. He was considered an expert on the archeology of the Herodian period and was a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .

During a visit to the excavations in Herodion on October 25, 2010, Netzer fell six meters when a wooden railing on which he had sat suddenly gave way. He was admitted to Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem with severe head injuries and broken cervical vertebrae. He died there three days later.
