The Eichgrabener Pfaffenbach is a left-hand tributary of the Lausitzer Neisse with a length of approx. 4.5 km in Zittau in the district of Görlitz .

description

The stream rises at the northern foot of the potter in the district of Oybin in the Zittau Mountains , its source is between the places Olbersdorf -Oberdorf and Eichgraben on the Niederen Geldsteinweg in the Zittau city forest. On its upper reaches, the Pfaffenbach flows northeast through the forest to the western edge of Eichgraben, where it reaches the Zittau basin .

Its middle course runs west of Lückendorfer Straße through the Eichgraben wetland, a wide depression between Butterhübel and Rote Höhe, in which numerous nameless rivulets flow into the stream. There the stream is crossed by the Lottersteig. To the northwest of the Tonberg, the Eichgrabener Pfaffenbach feeds the Eichgrabener ponds via a ditch that branches off to the right. In this section the stream corresponds to the FFH habitat type of a flowing water with underwater vegetation. Partly there are lowland hay meadows as well as an alder-ash-softwood alluvial forest with a high proportion of bird cherry in two places.

On its further course, the creek on the southern outskirts of Zittau is bridged by the Niederviebig and the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Strasse ( Staatsstrasse 132). The lower course of the Eichgrabener Pfaffenbach leads through the allotment garden “Sonnenhain” and under the Hartauer Dammweg. The brook flows into the Lusatian Neisse in Zittau south of the Gerhart-Hauptmann-Strasse industrial park on the German-Polish border.

Eichgraben wetland

The Eichgraben wetland, traversed by Lottersteig and other paths, is a predominantly open, 150 hectare grassland area with soils affected by waterlogging and groundwater, which is designated as an FFH area. The otter, the great mouse-eared bat, the noctule bat and the water bat are found in the area about one kilometer south of Zittau. In the upper part of the wetland there are several smaller still waters. The lower part is formed by the Eichgraben ponds.

Eichgrabener ponds

The entire Eichgraben wetland was previously used for pond farming. On the basis of the miles sheets, eight ponds existed here at the beginning of the 19th century with the Great Pond, Heideteich, Steinteich, Stöckelteich, Spawning pond, Casparteich, Great Grasteich and Henkerteich, two other pond sites, the acorn puddle and the small grass pond were desolate. Further to the northeast, at the Rapsbrückel on Gabler Strasse, before the confluence with the then still unregulated Neisse with the beef pond, there was another larger pond.

At the end of the 19th century, all ponds on the Pfaffenbach were drained. The Casparteich, the Große Grasteich and the Henkerteich at the executioner fields were dammed again in the first half of the 20th century. During the GDR era, the three ponds were used intensively for fishing. The various biotopes around the ponds are known for their abundance of birds. The drainage during the winter and the periodic burning of the reeds affected the spread of water-bound bird species or bird species that inhabit the silted areas. At the beginning of the 1990s, the ponds belonging to the city of Zittau, including the surrounding area, were leased by the Zittau regional group of NABU . Since then, the fishery has been managed by the Zittauer Sportfischerverein e. V. 140 species of birds, 15 species of fish, mussels, snails and insects, amphibians, numerous species of mammals and protected plants can be found in the ponds. The executioner's pond is protected as an area natural monument.
