occupation

An Engel auf Erden is a Franco-German fiction film from 1959. This film was available in two versions, one that was shown on the German market and a completely different one. The film was shot twice, always with small changes or longer or shorter scenes. Romy Schneider embodies a guardian angel who wants to help his protégé to be happy in the body of a stewardess. The French version is called Mademoiselle Ange .

action

The Angel Starline stewardess is hopelessly in love with the famous racing driver Pierre Chaillot. For professional reasons, he of course flies regularly and travels more often with the Angel Starline, where he meets the stewardess. For him, however, she is only one face of many, so that he does not pay much attention to her. Pierre, on the other hand, wants to marry the beautiful Princess Augusta von Münchenberg, to whom he is engaged. But even before the wedding, the bride runs away with a famous singer. The betrayed Pierre is shaken and gets drunk with his best friend Michel in a hotel. Afterwards he desperately wants to take his own life and writes a farewell letter. However, when he takes his revolver out of the drawer to commit suicide, an angel with the appearance of a stewardess suddenly appears to him.

Of course, Pierre doesn't remember the look, he just knows that suddenly a figure in a stewardess uniform is standing in front of him and claims to be his guardian angel. Still, he refrains from his endeavor to kill himself. Of course, Pierre doesn't believe the angel at first, but after he says he has been with him since he was born and can tell of events in his life that no one else would have known, he begins to doubt.

However, the higher-ranking angel in the form of a nun is not at all enthusiastic about the fact that the guardian angel has simply assumed the form of the stewardess. However, she then gives permission that the Guardian Angel may take on a completely human form for 24 hours and will be visible to all earth citizens. From now on, the angel in the form of the stewardess no longer leaves Pierre's side. She soon notices what it is like to be human and experiences feelings and pain. In the time, which is extended to a few hours by heavenly permission, the angel and Pierre begin to develop feelings for one another.

But time is running out and soon the angel has to leave again. At this point in time Augusta reappears on the scene. Pierre takes a test to see if the figure is really an angel or not. He asks Augusta again to marry him and hopes that the angel will appear at the right moment, which for him would be a sign that it was really an angel. However, by order of the “chief angel”, the angel does not appear, and Pierre then reconciles with Augusta and announces that he will marry her directly after the Monaco Grand Prix. His last hope is that his Guardian Angel would try to prevent the wedding and would appear again because of it.

Pierre drives like a man possessed in the race, and the 'top angel' (in the form of an elderly lady who has stood in for his guardian angel) can only keep him on track with great difficulty. In the end, however, he wins the race. His guardian angel visited the stewardess during that time and appears again after the race. She leads Pierre to an Angel Starline plane where the stewardess works. The Guardian Angel disappears unnoticed by Pierre and he believes he has his beloved in the stewardess he sees on the plane.

background

The year before, director Géza von Radványi and his leading actress Romy Schneider had already filmed the controversial melodrama Girl in Uniform , which dealt with the topic of same-sex love, which was very unusual for the time.

For the French actor Henri Vidal , who plays Pierre, this was one of his last roles. He died of a heart attack on December 10, 1959, at the age of only 40. For Jean-Paul Belmondo , however, it was one of his earlier roles. As a friend of the main actor, he plays a rather comical character here. The following year he made his breakthrough with his role in Out of Breath .

The premiere of the film took place on August 28, 1959 in the Schloss-Theater Heidelberg, the French premiere only on November 23, 1960 in Paris.
