A Story of Three Sisters (original title Kiz Kardeşler ) is a film by Emin Alper that premiered in February 2019 at the Berlinale and was released in German cinemas on June 4, 2020.

The three sisters Reyhan, Nurhan and Havva live with their father in a remote village in the middle of Anatolia. One by one, he sends them to town to work as maids. One after the other, they come back unsuccessful, Reyhan, the oldest daughter, even pregnant. Thereupon she is hastily married to the village shepherd Veysel.

The director was Emin Alper, who grew up in the mountains of Anatolia himself. He also wrote the script. Alper was born in Ermenek in 1974 , studied economics and history at Bogaziçi University in Istanbul and did a doctorate in modern and contemporary history. His second film Frenzy premiered in the competition at the Venice International Film Festival and was awarded the special prize of the jury there. In addition to his work as a filmmaker, Alper teaches at the Humanities and Social Sciences Institute of the Istanbul Technical University .

The shooting took place in Yusufeli , a town and district in the Artvin province on the Black Sea in northeastern Turkey . Emre Erkmen acted as cameraman .

The score was composed by Giorgos Papaioannou and Nikos Papaioannou .

The film was presented for the first time in February 2019 as part of the Berlinale . The film was shown for the first time in Turkey on April 19, 2019 as part of the Ankara International Film Festival and was released in Turkish cinemas on September 13, 2019. The cinema release in Germany was planned for April 2, 2020, but was postponed to June 4, 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. In Germany, the film is also offered on the Grandfilm platform at Vimeo .

Reviews

Kız Kardeşler received 3 out of 4 possible stars in the international review of the British trade magazine Screen International and thus led the ranking of all Berlinale competition films together with the contribution Synonymes .

Alexandra Seitz of the Berliner Zeitung writes that with his third film, Emin Alper provides renewed evidence of the filmmaker's masterful ability to condense, sharpen and create powerful images.
