action
Scheherezade tells the caliph the story of the young man Asamat, who went out into the world to find his beloved who appeared to him in a dream. Having set out from home, Asamat leads a caravan through the vast desert, where the travelers are attacked by a band of robbers. The outlaws kidnap the caravan, rob Asamat and leave him alone in the desert. In dire need, Asamat decides to use his silver magic flute, which was given to him by a good magician when he was a baby. The wish-fulfilling instrument cannot yet be played, however, because Asamat must have only reached the age of twenty for this. Nevertheless, a helping giant snake immediately appears to him, which leads him to the caravan of the merchant Karabai.
Once in the city of the caliph, Asamat must then enter the service of the greedy Karabai to pay the debts for his rescue. At work he meets the good magician, from whom he is supplied with equipment for the upcoming competition between the youngsters. The caliph's daughter, Princess Malika, who disguised herself as a man, also takes part in the race. In the desert, Malika then comes across a giant spider, causing it to fall from the horse in a fright. Asamat saves her from the monster and recognizes in her his beloved, sought by the dream. You continue the race that Malika can win.
Back at Karabai's estate, Asamat fends off the advances of Anora, the merchant's daughter, because he already loves the princess. In front of her father, Anora claims that Asamat wanted to dishonor her, so Karabai forbids the youth to stay overnight in his house. In the evening, in the city, Asamat then rushes to the aid of two men who are being robbed by robbers. After winning the battle, Asamat recognizes in the rescued the caliph and his vizier . From the latter he receives a purse out of supposed gratitude, because actually the vizier had to have the caliphs murdered by the robbers in order to gain his throne. Without the caliph's knowledge, the vizier later ensures that Asamat is mistaken for the leader of the robbers, so that the young man is to be executed.
Locked up in a chest, Asamat is thrown down a rock into a river. However, he survived the fall and was washed up with his prison right in front of the palace of the caliph. After the machinations of the treacherous vizier have been exposed there, he is given his fair wages. Asamat then returns home with his father who had traveled to the palace and a richly laden caravan. On the way, the father informs his son that it will be his twentieth birthday that day. Then the young man plays the silver flute and wishes the princess to come, which the magical instrument immediately fulfills for him.
