action

Renate's Loreley wine tavern on the Rhine , her uncle Eberwein and waiter Otto is in financial difficulties. Even the cuckoo on the cuckoo clock is already covered with a cuckoo from the bailiff and so the auction of the inventory is already within reach when Renate learns that she has inherited a winery in Italy . All three decide to visit the winery in the small village of Nipozzano.

Via detours - they have no money for gasoline and therefore have different people tow them all the way to Italy - they get to Nipozzano. Even a brief incident with an unfriendly driver can not dispel your good mood. What makes them puzzled, however, is that even the blasé notary gives them to understand that they should sell the winery as soon as possible, as it has fallen into disrepair and is haunted at night. He even has a prospective customer there - the three of them do not know that this is Romeo Brandolini, who they had recently noticed negatively as an unfriendly driver. The winery, in turn, had Romeo defaced by the manager Beppone in order to deter the heiress and thus achieve a low purchase price.

In fact, Renate, Uncle Eberwein and Otto are initially appalled, as there isn't even any furniture in the manor house. You still tackle it and whip the goods into shape. Beppone's daughter Claudia finally reveals that all of the furniture and pictures are in the attic. Claudia has completely different worries. She loves the teacher Riccardo, who also appears as a singer at village festivals, but Riccardo is not good enough for her father. He hopes to earn enough money by working with Romeo Brandolini to make Claudia a good match. However, she has no interest in it and is now trying to thwart her father's plans together with Riccardo. Romeo's plans are also viewed with suspicion: his brother Carlo has fallen in love with Renate and puts the heart first, while Romeo is always all about money. When Carlo hears that Renate has not received a loan from the banks in Florence to bring the winery into shape, he lends her money. He knows that she doesn't like the Brandolinis because she has since figured out what tricks Romeo wanted to use to get them for sale. She also suspects him of the wrong game. He therefore has the pastor Filippo deliver the money, who spends it as parish property.

Romeo sees his chances of success dwindling in acquiring the property. In any case, he is less concerned with the land than with a secret cellar room in which huge barrels full of old wine are supposed to be stored. At night he and Beppone break through a cellar wall to get to the barrels. Since Claudia and Riccardo know that Beppone could get too much money if the break-in succeeds, they use all sorts of tricks to wake Uncle Eberwein and Otto, who think it is haunted. They follow the voices in the basement and finally drive away Romeo and Beppone, who in turn believe in ghosts. By discovering the wine, Renate, Uncle Eberwein and Otto make money and can repay their debts to Pastor Filippo. With additional donations from Renate and the money from Carlos, Filippo buys a new church bell that will be inaugurated for the wine festival in the village.

At the festival, Claudia manages to get Romeo on her side. He gets Beppone to give his consent to Claudia and Riccardo being married. Filippo in turn now wants to reconcile Renate and Carlo. A forced dance between the two bell donors does not bring success and so Filippo finally tells Renate that Carlo actually lent her the money that she needed to rebuild the winery. Renate and Carlo are now a couple.
