A pale blue women's font (in the original: pale blue ) is an Austrian television film from 1984 based on the story Ein paleblaue Frauenschrift by Franz Werfel .

action

In Austria in 1936, 50-year-old Leonidas Tachezy proudly looks back on his life so far. The son of a poor high school teacher has risen to the highest circles in society by marrying the beautiful heiress Amélie Paradini. As section head in the Ministry of Education, he belongs to the country's political elite.

On his birthday he received a letter in pale blue women's handwriting. It is a letter from the Jew Vera Wormser, the love of his life. A short but intense love affair 11 years ago in Perugia (Italy) connects the two. (In the Werfels story, the affair took place in Heidelberg 18 years ago.) Now Vera, who is in Vienna, writes that a “talented young man of 11 years”, apparently his son, no longer goes to high school in Germany could visit. (In the story, the boy is 17 years old.) She now asks to find him a place in a good school in Vienna.

Tachezy remembers Vera, their short relationship and most of all his lies - and his guilty conscience awakens. In the first moment he wants to be brave to confess his love and his son. In a cabinet round, the otherwise opportunistic official even endangered his professional position when, against the spirit of the times, he campaigned for a Jewish university professor.

During the lunch break the picture changes: At home, his wife, who suspects him of infidelity, approaches him about the letter. He gives it to her; she does not see the meaning between the lines and tearfully apologizes for her jealousy. Now the time would have come for a confession, but he lets it pass.

When, at a subsequent meeting with Vera, it becomes clear that this 11-year-old is not his son at all, but that of a friend of Vera's, Tachezy drops the Jewish scholar and continues his self-satisfied life as before that day.

The film ends on the same day with a scene in the opera. Leonidas sits in the box and slowly falls asleep. As he falls asleep, he realizes that today fate would have given him the opportunity to change his life. He missed this opportunity. There won't be another chance.
