Population development in Delitzsch
This article shows the population development of Delitzsch , a city in the Free State of Saxony, in tabular and graphical form. On December 31, 2019, the " official population " for Delitzsch was 24,823 according to an update by the State Statistical Office of the Free State of Saxony.
Population development
In the Middle Ages and the early modern era , the population of Delitzsch grew only slowly and fell again and again due to the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. During the Thirty Years' War, troops moving through and billeting dragged deadly diseases into the city, which was overpopulated by refugees. In 1637 alone, 881 people died, 300 of them of starvation.
With the onset of industrialization in the 19th century, population growth accelerated. In 1800 only about 2700 people lived in the city, so the population of Delitzsch exceeded the limit of 10,000 in 1900. Until shortly after the end of the Second World War , the population rose again from around 16,500 in 1933 to around 25,100 in 1946. Reasons for this were not only immigrants from Eastern Europe but also the avoidance of defensive battles against the occupation of the city by American troops in April 1945.
After a decline in the population in the 1950s and 1960s, the number of inhabitants rose again to around 24,500 in the 1970s. This trend continued in the eighties, so that on December 31, 1988 with almost 28,400 inhabitants, the historic high was reached. The reason for this was the long-term lignite mining in the surrounding area, during which the majority of the inhabitants of the affected areas were relocated to Delitzsch. After reunification , the population began to decline briefly, which was slowed down in the mid-1990s on the one hand by the settlement of new companies and the development of commercial areas, on the other hand by incorporation. Until the turn of the century , the population remained quite stable. Through the last incorporation, that of the village of Döbernitz, Delitzsch gained around 1,700 inhabitants again in 2004 compared to 2000 and thus cracked the 28,000 inhabitant mark again at the end of the year. Since then, the population of Delitzsch has been slowly shrinking again, which is due, on the one hand, to the difference between births and deaths and, on the other hand, to an evident discrepancy between immigration and emigration.
The population figures in the following tables always refer to the territorial status valid at the time of the survey. Up to 1837 it is mostly an estimate, then census results (¹) or official updates from the city administration (until 1946), the state central administration for statistics (1946 to 1989) and the state statistical office (from 1990). From 1871, the information relates to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the location of the main residence”. Before 1871, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey procedures.

Residents by district
Since the districts of the core city (including the districts of Gertitz, Kertitz and Werben) are not statistically recorded separately, an exact statement about the population of the individual districts or districts can only be made about the core city and the remaining 12 districts. Schenkenberg is the largest, Poßdorf the smallest. A total of 4824 residents lived in the districts on the last censorship date - May 9, 2011 , which at that time made up around 19.0 percent of the population of Delitzsch.
