Population development of Esslingen am Neckar
This article describes the population development of Esslingen am Neckar .
Population development from 1340 to the present
The population development of Esslingen am Neckar can be traced back to the Middle Ages . Until the beginning of modern times , the city had only a few thousand inhabitants. The population grew only slowly and fell again and again due to the numerous wars, epidemics and famine. The population fell significantly in 1348 and 1566 due to two devastating plague epidemics . Also in the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) there was a significant decrease in the population. It was not until industrialization in the 19th century that the city's population grew very quickly. While only 7,000 people lived in the city in 1803, by 1900 there were already 27,000.
Shortly after the Second World War , the large number of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern German territories led to an increase in the population of 15,000 people to 65,000 in October 1946 within one year. In 1974 the population reached 97,029 due to the incorporation of Berkheim and Zell Peak. On December 31, 2012, the “official population ” for Esslingen was 88,295 according to an update by the Baden-Württemberg State Statistical Office (only main residences and after comparison with the other state offices).
The following overview shows the number of inhabitants according to the respective territorial status. Until 1788 it is mostly an estimate, then census results (¹) or official updates by the State Statistical Office. From 1871, the information relates to the “local population”, from 1925 to the resident population and since 1987 to the “population at the location of the main residence”. Before 1871, the number of inhabitants was determined according to inconsistent survey procedures.
