The Gdansk Railway Directorate was the regional administration of changing state railways with changing names in the Gdansk area , where it was also based.

On November 5, 1849, the Royal Directorate of the Eastern Railway was established in Bromberg , which took over the construction and operation of the Prussian Eastern Railway . The Ostbahn was one of the Prussian state railways . As part of the wave of nationalization of privately run railways in the Kingdom of Prussia that began in 1879 , the state railway had to be reorganized. For this purpose, 11 railway directorates were created with a uniform internal structure. The then Royal Railway Directorate Bromberg was one of them.

After the nationalization and the construction of numerous new lines, the administration of the state railway had to be reformed again. For this purpose, the number of railway directorates was increased from 11 to 20 and the area of ​​responsibility of the old directorates was massively reduced. In the course of these measures, the new Royal Railway Directorate in Gdansk was created and separated from the Bydgoszcz Directorate.

Free City of Gdansk

With the state independence of the Free City of Danzig and the cession of the Polish Corridor on January 10, 1920, the Danzig Railway Directorate of the Prussian State Railways became an authority in the Free City (also: Free City Railway Directorate ; Dyrekcja Kolei Wolnego Miasta ). A liquidation office was set up for the former Prussian management, which was closed on May 1, 1922. The matters affecting the remaining railway officials were then taken care of by the German Consulate General in Danzig, the other matters by the Reich Railway Directorate East .

In 1921 the Polish State Railways (PKP) took over the management as Dyrekcja Kolei Państwowych w Gdańsku (State Railway Directorate in Danzig) or Pomorska Dyrekcja Kolei w Gdańsku (Pomeranian Railway Directorate in Danzig). She was now responsible for the state railway lines in the Free City and the Pomeranian Voivodeship . On January 24, 1927, Germany and Poland regulated in the agreement on the implementation of Article 312 of the Treaty of Versailles of June 28, 1919, §§ 22-23 , the assumption of pension payments for Hessian-Prussian railway workers residing in Poland or the Free City through the PKP. The PKP renamed the directorate in 1929 in Dyrekcja Okręgowa Kolei Państwowych Gdańsk (Regional State Railway Directorate Danzig - DOKP Gdańsk).

The Senate of Danzig complained that the Railway Directorate not only looked after the routes in the Free City, but also in Pomerania, i.e. was the Polish authority based on Gdańsk territory, whereupon High Commissioner Richard Haking declared responsibility for Polish routes to be inadmissible in 1922. After many conflicts with Senate Ziehm , the PKP relocated the management to Toruń (DOKP Toruń) and some offices to Bydgoszcz in 1934 ; the Biuro Gdańskie PKP ( PKP's Gdańsk office) remained in the Gdańsk management building and was directly subordinate to the PKP headquarters in Warsaw . The Biuro Portowe PKP (port office of the PKP) in the Danzig port and some offices in Thorn were subordinate to the Danzig office.

Second World War

At the beginning of September 1939, the SS guard Eimann stormed the headquarters building, from which Polish railway workers, like Polish post officials , resisted the capture in the battle for the Polish post office in Danzig . On November 1, 1939, the Deutsche Reichsbahn set up the Reichsbahndirektion Danzig (RBD Danzig) in the building , which was responsible for the railway lines in the Reichsgau Danzig-West Prussia . Since November 15, 1939, the tariffs customary in the German Reich were in effect in the management district . In 1945 the management was evacuated to Lübeck. On March 1, 1946, the processing office of the RBD Danzig was relocated from Lübeck to Hamburg, where it was closed in the autumn of the same year.

Poland

In March 1945, the PKP provisionally set up a regional state railway directorate in Bydgoszcz, the new capital of the Pomeranian Voivodeship, which was relocated to Gdansk a few months later after the agreement with the Soviet Union and the Soviets also assumed responsibility for the railway lines in the former north-west German eastern territories took over.

In 1962 the DOKP Olsztyn ( Olsztyn Railway Directorate ) was affiliated. From 1975 to 1998 the Gdańsk Directorate officially carried the name Północna Dyrekcja Okręgowa Kolei Państwowych (PDOKP - Northern Regional State Railway Directorate).

Headquarters

The management building, which still exists today, was built between 1911 and 1914.

From 1979 to 2008 a branch of the Warsaw Railway Museum also used the Gdansk headquarters and after the restructuring of the PKP, the Pion Nieruchomości PKP (central real estate department of the PKP) worked here from 1998 to 2000 , and from 1998 to 2001 the Dyrekcja Okręgu Infrastruktury Kolejowej (regional directorate of railway infrastructure) ) and since 2002 a regional department ( Oddział Regionalny ) of the railway infrastructure company PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe , a PKP subsidiary, as well as various operating units of the PKP, which are subordinate to the PKP office in Gdynia .
