El Aïoun Sidi Mellouk or El Aioun Sidi Mellouk ( Central Atlas Tamazight ⵍⵄⵢⵓⵏ ⵙⵉⴷⵉ ⵎⵍⵍⵓⴽ ; Arabic العيون سيدي ملوك) is a city with approx. 45,000 inhabitants in the Taourirt province in the Oriental region in northeastern Morocco .
Location and climate
El Aïoun Sidi Mellouk is located on the north bank of the Oued Za in northeastern Morocco on the busy route Fès - Taza - Guercif - Oujda in a hilly to mountainous area at an altitude of about 605 m . The climate is semi-desert; the rather sparse rain (approx. 275 mm / year) falls - apart from a few summer thunderstorms - actually only in the winter months.

Originally only a small Berber town , El Aïoun Sidi Mellouk has grown enormously since the time of the protectorate and especially after the independence of Morocco through immigration of people from the eastern Rif Mountains . One speaks Berber dialects or Moroccan Arabic .
economy
For centuries, the region was mainly a nomadic or semi-nomadic area, but it was not until the 20th century that sedentarism largely established itself. Irrigation projects along the Moulouya and Za rivers have more than doubled the arable area in the last decades of the 20th century. With the creation of the Taourirt Province (1999) the importance of the city increased. National or international tourism plays no role in economic life.
history
As in most of Morocco's Berber areas, there are no records of the history of the region and city. However, we know that the Alawites - Sultan Moulay Ismail (ruled 1672-1727.) In 1679 the town with a fort ( kasbah ) furnished.
Attractions
The old fortress ( kasbah ) formerly located on the outskirts is surrounded by a rammed earth wall with protruding bastions . The numerous holes in the wall are created by inserted wooden beams on which the gradually higher set of cladding or scaffolding rests during the construction of the wall or during restorations .
