Elan is a Slovenian company from Begunje that manufactures sporting goods - mainly for skiing.
The company was founded in 1945 by the carpenter and ski jumper Rudi Finžgar (1920–1995). At first it was mainly produced for the Yugoslav market; It was only when the Swedish skier Ingemar Stenmark started using Elan skis in the 1970s that the company became more widely known. The number of employees in Begunje doubled between 1970 (668 employees) and 1987 (1351 employees).
In 1990 the company was in debt and was taken over by its main creditor, Privredna Banka in Zagreb . Since the late 1990s, Elan has been majority owned by several semi-public Slovenian investment funds, the managing director is Primož Finžgar, a son of the company's founder. The glider production has been an independent company called 1999 AMS Flight outsourced, which in Begunje motor glider produced.
In 2004 the company in Begunje had 1,100 employees and produced around 550,000 pairs of skis a year . Elan also owned a factory in Fürnitz (municipality of Finkenstein am Faaker See , Carinthia , Austria ) which produced snowboards (partly for other brands) . Other subsidiaries manufacture sailing and motor boats .
On March 13, 2013, according to bankruptcy protection association KSV1870 the bankruptcy of the Austrian Elan daughter Elan Sportartikelerzeugungs- und Handelsgesellschaft mbH in Fürnitz ( Kärnten ) on the Regional Court Klagenfurt opened. The Carinthian Elan snowboard factory had around 8.7 million euros in debts, with assets of 6.5 million euros. 78 employees and 120 creditors were affected by the bankruptcy.
