The Krásný Jez – Nové Sedlo u Lokte railway line is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic . The line, which is only partially in operation today, has its origins in the Elbogen local railway and the Schönwehr – Elbogen railway . It begins in Krásný Jez ( Schönwehr ) and leads via Horní Slavkov ( Schlaggenwald ) and Loket ( Elbogen ) to Nové Sedlo u Lokte ( Neusattl ).

According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

Elbogen local railway

The Elbogen Localbahn was the first private local railway in Austria-Hungary . The concession document for a secondary railway from the city of Elbogen to the Elbogen-Neusattel station of the Buschtěhrad railway company was issued on January 25, 1877. The line was opened after a short construction period on October 15, 1877.

The Elbogen Local Railway came into the ownership of the Austrian Local Railway Company (ÖLEG) for the first time in 1881 . In 1886 the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB) took over the management of the line. After the nationalization of the ÖLEG on January 1, 1894, the line became the property of the kkStB. After the First World War, the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways ČSD took the place of the kkStB .

Railway Schönwehr – Elbogen

As early as December 25, 1886, the Austrian government granted a concession for a local railway between Marienbad and Karlsbad with branches to Elbogen and Merkelsgrün . For financial reasons, however, construction did not begin.

The Schönwehr – Elbogen railway was approved on May 26, 1899 as the main line of the second rank . The line was opened on December 7th, 1901. From the beginning, the kkStB was responsible for the owners. After the First World War, the newly founded ČSD took the place of the kkStB. On January 1, 1925, the Schönwehr – Elbogen railway was nationalized by law and the line was integrated into the ČSD network.

After nationalization

The line ends at Loket předměstí station today (2009).

After the Sudetenland was annexed to Germany in autumn 1938, the line came to the Deutsche Reichsbahn , Reichsbahndirektion Dresden . The connection was now included in the Reich curriculum as the route 166d Neusattl – Schönwehr . After the end of the Second World War , the line came back to the ČSD on May 9, 1945.

After the political change in Czechoslovakia in 1989 and the associated cessation of mining in Horní Slavkov, there was a sharp decline in the volume of travel and freight traffic. Due to damage to the superstructure, all traffic between Loket and Krásný Jez had to be stopped on May 31, 1997. Although the financial means were available later, the route was never repaired. Only the short section Loket – Loket předměstí was reopened for passenger trains on December 10, 2006.

On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded České dráhy (ČD) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia . Since 2003 it has been part of the network of the state infrastructure operator Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC). The 2008 timetable provided for a total of 15 pairs of passenger trains on working days for the Chodov – Loket předměstí connection, some of which were to and from Karlovy Vary .

In 2013, the route operator SŽDC had the Krásný Jez – Ležnice section repaired in order to be able to use some of the industrial connections there again for freight traffic. The renewed route was put back into operation on June 28, 2013 with a festive event. The Ležnice stop was renamed Horní Slavkov-Kounice . On the weekends from July 5 to September 1, 2013, three pairs of ČD passenger trains ran on this section of the route, financed by the town of Horní Slavkov and Karlovarský kraj . These seasonal services on the weekends in the summer months have been offered regularly since then.

The restoration of the further stretch to Horní Slavkov is planned. However, the repair of the section to Loket předměstí remains completely uncertain. This is expected to cost CZK 200 million.

Vehicle use

The use of the ÖLEG F on the Elbogen local railway is documented . From 1881 a steam railcar ( ÖLEG C 201 ) was also used there. This only proved itself to a limited extent, so that it was handed over to Mährisch Weißkirchen after a few years .

The three-coupled tank locomotives of the kkStB series 99 were originally used between Schönwehr and Elbogen . The four-axle railcars of the 820 series were also used until the mid-1990s . Today operations are carried out exclusively with the tried and tested ČD series 810 railcars .
