from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Elena Conti (born February 14, 1967 in Varese ) is an Italian biochemist with significant work in molecular biology .

Career

Conti studied chemistry at the University of Pavia from 1986 to 1991 and continued her studies from 1992 with a focus on biochemistry at Imperial College London , where she received her doctorate in 1996 with a thesis on protein crystallography . From 1997 to 1999 she was a postdoctoral fellow at Rockefeller University in New York City .

From 1999 to 2005 she was group leader at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg ; her group was assigned to both the Structural and Computational Biology Unit and the Gene Expression Unit .

Elena Conti has been Director at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Martinsried since January 2006 , where she heads the research area “Cellular Structural Biology ”. She has held an honorary professorship at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich since 2007 .

Act

Elena Conti's research concerns the molecular mechanisms of transport and degradation of RNA . One focus is the mechanisms of the export of messenger RNA (mRNA) into the cytoplasm as well as processes with which defective mRNA is recognized and broken down.

honors and awards

Elena Conti was honored with an ELSO Early Career Award in 2005 and the FEBS Anniversary Award of the Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2007 .

The German Research Foundation awarded Elena Conti and her specialist and former work colleague Elisa Izaurralde the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize in 2008 . In 2009, Conti was elected a member ( matriculation number 7258 ) of the Leopoldina . In December 2010 she was made a Knight of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic .

In 2014 Conti was awarded the Louis Jeantet Prize . In the same year she was elected a full member of the Academia Europaea . For 2019 she was awarded the Schleiden Medal of the Leopoldina and an Antonio Feltrinelli Prize .
