Elfie Hartwig Wörner (née Reinsch ; born July 31, 1941 in Berlin ; † July 4, 2006 in Munich ) was a German journalist and benefactor . As the second wife and widow of the Federal Defense Minister and NATO Secretary General Manfred Wörner , she was publicly present, including as the patron of the problem children campaign of the Bundeswehr social welfare organization . For her services she was u. a. honored with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

Life

Wörner attended the Gabriele von Bülow High School (Abitur 1971) in Berlin-Tegel . She later studied pharmacy at the Free University of Berlin and worked as a journalist.

In 1982 she married the then Federal Minister of Defense Manfred Wörner , lawyer and reserve officer and later NATO Secretary General; they had no children together. Elfie Wörner got involved in the social and cultural area u. a. as promoter of the Museum of European Art in Nörvenich, as Trustees Chairman (from 2002) of the Foundation Lebensblicke for colon cancer prevention and Freimut Duve and Christian Schwarz-Schilling as a board member (since 1995) of aid for Bosnia and Herzegovina . As early as May 1985 she was the patron of the campaign problem children in armed forces families of the armed forces welfare organization . In 1988, in order to collect donations, she opened the caricature exhibition "Stir yourselves!" In Siegburg. From her estate was Elfie Wörner Foundation founded that promotes action for disabled children on.

For her commitment she was honored with the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon by Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker . She was also the recipient of the Alexander Order for Art and Science . In 2002 she received the Golden Award from the Atlantic Club of Bulgaria . In 2006 a memorial service was held in her honor in the Allerheiligen-Hofkirche in Munich.
