Elisabeth, Princess of Denmark (born May 8, 1935 in Copenhagen ; † June 19, 2018 in Lyngby ) was the daughter of the Danish Hereditary Prince Knut of Denmark and his wife Caroline-Mathilde of Denmark . She was a member of the House of Glücksburg , a branch line of the House of Oldenburg , and was included in the line of succession to the Danish throne . She was a cousin of the Danish Queen Margrethe II. Her full name is Elisabeth Caroline-Mathilde Alexandrine Helena Olga Thyra Feodora Estrid Margarethe Désirée .

Elisabeth's parents formed the Danish heir apparent from 1947 until 1953, when the succession regulation was changed in favor of Queen Margrethe II, who is now reigning .

She grew up with her two younger brothers, Ingolf and Christian, at Sorgefri Castle in Lyngby near Copenhagen. Her paternal grandparents were King Christian X and Queen Alexandrine of Denmark .

education

Elisabeth finished her school education in 1952 when she graduated from secondary school. She then went to Switzerland for a year and attended the Brillantmont International College in Lausanne . She then completed a year at the Suhrs Madakademiet household school in Copenhagen. From 1954 to 1956 she attended the renowned Copenhagen Fashion Academy Margrethe-Skolen (today: Scandinavian Academy of Fashion Design ). In addition to Danish , Princess Elisabeth also spoke English , French and German .

Employment

In 1956 Elisabeth joined the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs , where she worked as an archive assistant for 45 years. During her professional career, she worked abroad several times: in 1973 she went to Washington, DC for three years , and another four years followed from 1981. From 1989 to 1993 she worked in Geneva . Elisabeth ended her career at the Ministry in 2001 as an official inspector.

Succession to the throne

Princess Elisabeth was twelfth in the line of succession to the Danish throne . Her brothers Ingolf and Christian († 2013) had married civilly and thus lost their place in the Danish line of succession. As a descendant of the British King George II , Princess Elisabeth was also included in the British line of succession .

Princess Elisabeth was the patron of the following organizations:

  • Kjæden / Kædeordenen (old order with the aim of helping the blind and feeding the poor)
  • Dansk-Brasiliansk Selskab ("Danish-Brazilian Society")
  • Dansk-Japansk Selskab ("Danish-Japanese Society")
  • Præmieselskabet for Plejemødre af 1861 ("Society for Foster Mothers of 1861")

Private

Princess Elisabeth was unmarried and had no children. She lived and lived with the Danish cameraman, director and producer Claus Hermansen for over 20 years until he died in 1997.

From 2000 to 2004 she formed a couple with the Danish architect and industrial designer Klavs Nørregaard Helweg-Larsen .

Elisabeth was an aunt of the Danish countesses Feodora, Josephine and Camilla von Rosenborg .

In April 2014 it was announced that Princess Elisabeth would move into the Damebygningen , a free-standing wing of the royal Sorgenfri Palace , where she grew up.

Awards

Princess Elisabeth was the bearer of the Elephant Order , the highest honor in Denmark.
