Elkin Fernando Álvarez Botero (born November 21, 1968 in El Retiro ) is a Colombian Roman Catholic clergyman and auxiliary bishop in Medellín .

Life

Elkin Fernando Álvarez Botero graduated from the Pontifical Gregorian University with a degree in Biblical theology and was ordained a priest for the diocese of Sonsón-Rionegro on July 1, 1993 . After working as a pastor and lecturer, he became rector of the national seminary in La Ceja in 2000 . From 2003 to 2009 he worked for the Apostolic Nunciature in the Colombian capital Bogotá .

Pope Benedict XVI appointed him on May 28, 2012 auxiliary bishop in Medellín and titular bishop of Gemellae in Numidia . The Archbishop of Medellín, Ricardo Antonio Tobón Restrepo , gave him episcopal ordination on August 4th of the same year ; Co- consecrators were Flavio Calle Zapata , Archbishop of Ibagué , and Héctor Ignacio Salah Zuleta , Bishop of Riohacha .

On July 6, 2017, he was elected General Secretary of the Colombian Bishops' Conference.
