Éloi-Charlemagne Taupin (born August 17, 1767 in Barbery ( Oise ), † April 10, 1814 in the Battle of Toulouse ) was a French Général de division and Baron of the Empire.

Éloi Charlemagne was the son of the farm laborer Eloy Taupin (born June 12, 1740 in Barbery), married since July 3, 1765 in Senlis with Marie Louise Barbier (* before 1745 in Ayencourt † October 18, 1776 in Brasseuse ( Département Oise )) .

military service

From May 14, 1787 to February 17, 1791 Taupin was a member of the "105 e régiment d'infanterie de ligne" (formerly Régiment du Roi ). On September 18, 1791, he was first named Sous-lieutenant in the "1 er bataillon des volontaires national de l'Oise" and on January 31, 1792, by election, he was appointed captain in this unit.

From 1792 to 1795 he was assigned to the Armée du Nord, where he achieved the rank of chief de bataillon in the "183 e demi-brigade" (183rd half-brigade) and later in the 28 e régiment d'infanterie de ligne .

From 1795 to 1797 he was in command of the "Armée de l'Intérieur" and in 1798 was transferred to the "Armée d'Helvétie" (Helvetic Army). On June 9, 1800, he distinguished himself in the Battle of Montebello and the Battle of Marengo , in the latter he was wounded, whereupon he was awarded a saber of honor on September 15, 1802. Issued January 1803.

In the years 1802-1803 he was after Boulogne drafted and stood there under the command of Général Vandamme , and then on December 22, 1803 Major in 11 e régiment d'infantry de ligne to be promoted. On June 14, 1804 he was awarded the order of "Officier de la Légion d'honneur ".

On 1 February 1805 he was appointed Colonel promoted and took over as commander of the 103 e régiment d'infantry de ligne . With this regiment he took part in the campaigns to Germany, fought in the Gazan division until 1807 in Prussia and Poland . In the Battle of Austerlitz he caught the attention of Napoléon , who then awarded him the order of "Commandant de la Légion d'honneur " (Commander's Cross of the Legion of Honor) on December 25, 1805 . On February 21, 1807 he was promoted to Général de brigade on the occasion of the Battle of Eylau . Assigned to the "Armée d'Espagne" (Spanish Army) in 1808, he returned in 1809 and took part in the campaigns in Germany and against Austria. In 1810 Taupin was reassigned to the army in Spain. On July 22, 1812, he commanded the "6 e division d'infanterie" in the battle of Salamanca . On January 28, 1813, he was promoted to "Général de division" and on March 24, 1813, he took command of the "4 e division d'infanterie". This was part of the «Armée du Portugal» (Portuguese Army) under the command of Général Reille and fought on June 21, 1813 in the Battle of Vitoria . After the appointment of Maréchal Soult as commander of the «Armée des Pyrénées» (Pyrenees Army ), the «4 e division d'infanterie» remained under the command of Général Reille and distinguished itself in the battle of Sorauren (Pyrenees) on July 28, 1813 and in the defense of the "Baïonnette" redoubt off Ascain on the Nivelle . On December 10, 1813, Taupin was successful again when he and his troops were able to push the Allies back to their entrenchments at Arcangues in the battle near Bassussary. On February 27, 1814, his division on the right wing of the French battle order was able to repel five attacks by the units under General Beresford in the Battle of Orthez .

In the battle of Toulouse the Taupin division occupied the redoubt "Sipière". After an attack by the English was repulsed, Taupin made the mistake of launching a counterattack, which he led himself and in which he was killed at 11:00 a.m. The confusion that followed his death in the French ranks was used by Beresford to take the redoubt. In the afternoon, Taupin's body was laid out in the Saint-Etienne Cathedral in Toulouse.
