Life

Els Aarne's parents were the engineer Jan Aarmann and his wife Marie Aarmann. In 1939 Els Aarne married the horn player and cellist Mart (in Otto) Paemurru (born May 31, 1908 in Toila (village) , Estonia; † November 6, 1972 in Tallinn , Estonia). Els and Mart Paemurru had two children, Mait and Peter Paemurru (born June 27, 1948). Peter is himself a well-known cellist and conductor.

Els Aarne studied music education with Gustav Ernesaks at the Tallinn Conservatory until 1939 , piano with Theodor Lemba until 1942 and composition with Heino Eller until 1946 . From 1939 to 1945 she worked as a piano teacher at the teachers' college in Tallinn. There she also taught theoretical subjects. From 1944 to 1974 she taught music theory and piano at the Tallinn State Conservatory (now the Estonian Music and Theater Academy ), where her husband Mart also taught as a lecturer. She also taught at the Tallinna Muusikakoola [Tallinn Music School]

Els Aarne has mainly appeared as a composer. She used Estonian folk song melodies and their characteristic scales, but also experimented with twelve-tone technique . The themes of her choral works were varied: work, home, nature, humor and interpersonal relationships.

Aarne was a concert pianist. She herself was the soloist at the premiere of her piano concerto and she acted as a piano accompanist in various chamber music ensembles. Many Estonian musicians played their chamber music, such as Elsa Maasik, Georg Ots , Margarita Voites, Peep Lassmann and their children Mait and Peter Paemurru. Her choral works have been and are mainly performed by Estonian choirs, her orchestral music by ERSO . It was conducted by Paul Karp , Roman Matsov , Neeme Järvi , Peeter Lilje , Jüri Alperten and Olev Oja (* 1935). She wrote a solfeggio school in 2 volumes (1960; 1962) that was widespread in the Soviet Union. She wrote music reviews for the newspaper Sirp ja Vasar ("Sickle and Hammer"), made radio broadcasts about Estonian interpreters and composers, and photographed and made short films. The short film Azalea won an amateur film competition, as did some of her photographs in photo competitions.
