Elsbeth Gysi (born March 6, 1923 in Bern ; † February 17, 1997 ibid), von Lupfig , was a Swiss graphic artist , illustrator , draftsman , painter and glass painter .

Life

Elsbeth Gysi was born in Bern as the daughter of Ernst Gysi and Bertha Gysi-Kleiner. Her brother Theo Gysi was three years older and her sister Ruth Morgenthaler-Gysi three years younger. From the late 1920s the Gysi family lived in Köniz . Elsbeth attended primary and secondary school in Köniz and then the subsidiary trading school in Bern THB, where she listlessly received “in addition to solid professional training, also a good general education”. This was followed by the obligatory French year for girls with an officer's family in Geneva. Back in Bern, she took up a job as an office clerk at the Steiger lithography company. Further training in the kindergarten teacher’s seminar at the New Girls’s School Monbijou was followed by various internships in kindergartens and day nurseries. At the age of 26 she found her true calling as an artist while working on a children's newspaper for Nestlé in Vevey .

In 1949 she took courses in free drawing, portrait and illustration at Max von Mühlenen's painting school . The time with the role model Max von Mühlenen should point the way for the work of the rest of her life. For more than 20 years she was connected to him in a kind of apprenticeship and friendship.

In the 1950s, Elsbeth Gysi attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris with her sister Ruth . From 1951 she lived in her parents' house with her sister, who married Walter Morgenthaler in 1959 . She took courses at the arts and crafts school in Bern with G. Keller. She was closely associated with her sister throughout her life. Together they published books and participated in exhibitions. Elsbeth Gysi lived and worked in her parents' house in Köniz until her death in 1997.

She was a member of GSBK and GSMBA .

After Gysi had already had success with her pictures at various exhibitions, she won first prize with the mural The Letter Messenger in old Bern for the PTT building in Langnau in Emmental . In the decade in question, she was said to be the only woman to win a federal competition that she was able to run herself. She spent the summers of 1954 and 1955 with friends at the Bernese painter Hanni Pfister (1910–1991) on Mallorca . Another public contract in which she was awarded the 1st prize was the sgraffito The Apple Shot at the officers' barracks in Bern, which was an exceptional honor, especially for her as a woman. This work was later so damaged that in 1989 Gysi painted a second version of the theme on four metal plates that were mounted on the wall in the form of an oversized deck of cards. In 1967 she painted a paradise garden on the wooden wall of the youth parlor for the Thomaskirche in Liebefeld . Another work of art in architecture was created in Eisen by Max Roth (* 1954) at the Blindenmoos school complex in Schliern , based on her designs from 1994–1995 . In addition, she worked with book illustrations and glass painting. The bequeathed work is looked after by the Society for the Estate Administration of Swiss Female Artists.
