Elsbeth Lange

Elsbeth Lange (born November 20, 1928 in Frankenberg / Saxony ; † December 10, 2009 ) was a German palynologist (pollen analysis). She worked in the field of vegetation history, paleo-ethnobotany and archaeobotany .

Life

Elsbeth Lange was born as the third child of the shoemaker Bruno Lange and the weaver Margarethe Lange. After attending elementary school in Frankenberg (1935–1943) and the Frankenberg commercial vocational school (1943–1944), she became an apprentice in November 1944 and then until autumn 1946 employed by the Frankenberg city administration. Until 1947 she worked in the municipal administrations of Stollberg and Chemnitz . In 1951 she attended a six-month course at the "Edwin Hoernle" institute for teacher training in Radebeul , then was an intern at the 10th elementary school in Leipzig for a year, and after another year of study at the institute for teacher training, now in Leipzig, in the summer of 1953 for training To complete the lower level teacher. She then became a pedagogical employee in the young naturalist station in Jena . While working, she completed a distance learning course , which in 1957 earned her the qualification to teach biology for the middle school. In the winter semester of 1956/1957 she began studying biology at the University of Jena , which she completed in May 1961 with a biochemical thesis on methods of qualitative saponin detection and their application to the investigation of primulaceae .

From 1960 on, Lange was a scientific assistant at the Institute for Special Botany at the University of Jena for six years. On May 28, 1965, she was awarded a Dr. rer. nat. PhD. On September 1, 1966, she became a research assistant at the Institute for Prehistory and Early History (later Central Institute for Ancient History and Archeology ) of the Academy of Sciences of the GDR in Berlin and remained so until 1988. On October 23, 1974, she qualified as a professor at the Botanical Institute from the University of Halle to Dr. sc. nat. She also became a corresponding member of the International Union for Quaternary Research (INQUA) that year . On September 1, 1984, she was appointed professor by the GDR Academy of Sciences. Most recently she was retired.

Lange received the Caspar Friedrich Wolff Medal from the Biological Society of the GDR. From 1969 to 2002 she was a member of the Botanical Association of Berlin and Brandenburg. Since 1997 she has been a corresponding member of the German Archaeological Institute .
