Emanuele Filiberto Umberto Reza Ciro René Maria di Savoia (born June 22, 1972 in Geneva ) is the son of Viktor Emanuel and Marina Ricolfi Doria and the eldest grandson of the last Italian king Umberto II.

Life

As for all male descendants of the Royal House of Savoy, entry into Italy was prohibited for a long time. This ban was lifted by a constitutional amendment of October 23, 2002, which came into force on November 10, 2002 after Emanuele Filiberto and his father renounced all claims to the throne and committed themselves to the republic. Emanuele Filiberto di Savoia, who was born in Geneva as a Swiss citizen (with a citizen of Cologny ), received an Italian passport from the Italian consulate in Geneva on November 22, 2002 and has been an Italian-Swiss citizen since then . In the same year he published his memoir Sognando l'Italia, in which he reports on his life in exile.

On September 25, 2003, Emanuele Filiberto married the French actress Clotilde Courau in Rome , with whom he has two daughters, Vittoria di Savoia (full name Vittoria Cristina Adelaide Chiara Maria), who was born in Geneva on December 28, 2003, and Luisa di Savoia (full name Luisa Giovanna Agata Gavina Bianca Maria), who was born in Geneva on August 16, 2006.

Emanuele Filiberto describes himself with the title of Prince of Piedmont and Veneto , which, however, is not recognized under the Italian constitution. Until 2006 he was the designated successor of his father as head of the House of Savoy . The reason for the exclusion from the succession is the inappropriate marriage of his father.

Since his return to Italy, Emanuele Filiberto has tried various activities, including acting in commercials, marketing his own men's collection and, from January 2009, participating in the fifth season of the entertainment show Ballando con le stelle , the Italian version of Strictly Come Dancing The winner was he and Natalia Titova on March 21, 2009 .

In November 2007, he and his father Viktor Emanuel von Savoyen and his cousin Marco von Savoyen officially announced a claim for damages in the amount of 260 million euros against the Italian state and demanded the restitution of all assets confiscated when the Italian Republic was founded. The claim for damages is based on reparation for the moral injustice that was done to his father Viktor Emanuel and him during their exile. The Italian government stated in a statement that not only did the Italian state owe nothing to the House of Savoy , but on the contrary, the Italian state reserved the right to file a claim for damages against the House of Savoy because of their grave responsibilities during fascism . The demand, from which the remaining members of the House of Savoy distanced themselves, met with fierce criticism.

politics

In the early Italian parliamentary elections held in April 2008 , Emanuele Filiberto stood in the constituency abroad with his own list called Valori e Futuro (German: Values and Future ). In addition to him as party president, the list included another 10 party members. Among them was Lucio Barresi, PR manager at the Campione d'Italia casino , who was involved in the blackmail scandal involving young showgirls known in Italy as Vallettopoli . The close staff of Emanuele Filiberto's movement also included Enrico Giuliano as party coordinator. The public prosecutor in Rome opened proceedings against him on suspicion of tax evasion and fraud.

The Valori e Futuro movement, founded by Emanuele Filiberto, hit the headlines as early as October 2007 when Mariano Turrisi, whom he appointed as Vice President of Valori e Futuro and a friend of his, was arrested for membership of the Mafia.

Of the 1,013,086 valid votes cast by Italians abroad worldwide, the Valori e Futuro list was the last to receive only 4,457, which corresponds to 0.44% of the vote. Emanuele Filiberto himself only got 1,811 votes. In Italy, Emanuele Filiberto did not stand for election.

Another attempt to be elected to a political office failed on the occasion of the European elections in 2009 , in which Emanuele Filiberto ran for the Unione di Centro in the constituency of North-West and received 22,242 of the 9,117,021 votes cast there.
