Emil Ferdinand Hartwich (born May 9, 1843 in Danzig , † December 1, 1886 in Berlin ) was a German lawyer and sports educator .

Life

Born as the son of Emil Hermann Hartwich , the Gdansk building officer and railway engineer , Hartwich attended school in Danzig, from 1853 the humanistic grammar school in Berlin, from 1856 the Friedrich Wilhelm grammar school in Cologne . In 1862 he began studying law at the University of Heidelberg , where he became a member of the Corps Rhenania . After completing his studies at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin , he joined the Prussian judicial service in 1868 as a regional court trainee lawyer in Cologne . After completing his military service, he married Hero Jung (1845–1906) in 1870. She was a daughter of the politician Georg Jung , a granddaughter on the mother's side of the banker Johann Heinrich Stein and a sister of the Salonnière Anna vom Rath . The couple had a daughter, who died after two years, and three sons. In 1874 he became an assistant judge at the Düsseldorf Regional Court , and in 1879 a local judge at the local court there. In his spare time he worked in the Düsseldorf rowing club in 1880 .

Hartwich campaigned for the physical training of young people, wrote several papers on it and initiated the founding of the Central Association for Body Care in People and School on March 6, 1882 in the Düsseldorf Tonhalle , after he had founded the Düsseldorf Wanderbund in 1881 , which has existed to date and was awarded the Eichendorff badge in 1984. He is therefore considered an important representative of the early game movement , whose intentions were then used for their representatives such as the Prussian MP Emil von Schenckendorff in the pre-military phase.

Because of the love affair with Elisabeth von Ardenne , whom Hartwich met in January 1879 at a festival of the Düsseldorf artist association Malkasten and met again and again in the following years, her husband Armond Léon Baron von Ardenne challenged Hartwich to a pistol duel. It was held on November 27, 1886 in the Berlin Hasenheide and ended fatally for the reserve officer Hartwich. The matter had the tragedy of a love triangle , because Baron von Ardenne was both Hartwich's friend and sports comrade, and formed the historical background for Theodor Fontane's novel Effi Briest .

In Dusseldorf-Oberkassel the Hartwich street was named after him.
