Eerke U. Hamer

Eerke Ubbo Hamer (born April 21, 1937 in Mettmann ; † April 28, 2011 in Bafra , Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus ) was a German theologian and sports historian .

Life

After graduating from high school in Duisburg in 1957, he studied Protestant theology at Bethel and the universities in Tübingen , Heidelberg , Hamburg and Mainz , where he passed his first theological exam in 1964. After the vicariate in Traben-Trarbach and the second exam he became a scientist. Employed at the Carl Diem Institute in Cologne and wrote the first biography of Willibald Gebhardt here . From Cologne he went to Hamburg, where he worked on the one hand as a research assistant at the university and on the other hand studied sports science and completed his state examination with Konrad Paschen in religious education and sports. Now he worked as a teacher in Lüneburg and began with Arnd Krüger with his doctoral degree in sports history at the University of Göttingen. He then became a research assistant at the Lower Saxony Institute for Sports History and worked on the history of skiing in the Harz Mountains . Hamer is considered an expert in the history of sports in the late 19th century. He died in a swimming accident in Northern Cyprus.
