Emil Hofmann (born February 21, 1865 in Egelshofen , † March 10, 1927 in Bern ; resident in Egelshofen and Weiningen ) was a Swiss pastor and politician .

life and work

Emil Hofmann was the eldest son of the teacher Reinhard and after finishing secondary school he attended the lower grammar school in Constance and then the canton school in Frauenfeld .

From 1885 to 1890 Emil Hofmann studied philosophy , political science and theology at the universities of Basel , Jena , Freiburg im Breisgau and Zurich . He passed the theological state examination in Zurich and was ordained in 1889 .

Emil Hofmann received his first job as a pastor at Kapitel Seetal , based in Altnau . In 1890 he married Frieda Schwank von Altnau and in the same year the parish of Stettfurt appointed Emil Hofmann to their orphaned pastor. Here he was pastor from 1890 to 1898 and school inspector from 1899 to 1905.

In 1891 Hofmann received his doctorate in economics . His dissertation dealt with the mortgage debt in the Matzingen district . Further scientific work followed, including those on behalf of the Swiss Confederation or various Swiss cantons.

On September 11, 1898 Hofmann was elected to the National Council and in 1905 he was elected to the government council . As such, he was elected President of the Finance and Audit Committee in 1925. Emil Hofmann was President of the National Council in 1925/1926. In 1910 Emil Hofmann was the leader of the Democratic Party of the Canton of Thurgau .

After his wife died in 1905, he married Anna Elisabeth, née Ruess, in 1911. As a result of the Spanish flu , his only two sons and one grandchild died in November 1918
