Emil Hohl (born October 1, 1958 ; † April 8, 2019 in Au SG , Switzerland ) was a Swiss inventor and entrepreneur . He was as representatives working for the company Oertli instruments and started in 1996 with the company Medicel AG Ausserrhoden Wolfhalden independently .

Lens injection systems

In cataract operations , artificial lenses are inserted into the capsular bag of the eye. Hohl has developed a method for preparing and inserting an intraocular lens by means of an injector nozzle, which makes it possible to minimize the contact between the injection instrument and the lens. While the necessary ocular incision to remove the clouded lens and insert the implant was typically at least 4 mm in the 1990s , the cutting length could be reduced to 1.8 mm with the procedure patented in 2001. This is mainly achieved through the use of a lubricant that surrounds the lens in the injection channel and prevents direct contact between the lens and the plunger. This new process also greatly reduced the likelihood of damage to the lens during the injection process.

Medicel

Originally founded as a one-man trading company, Medicel is now an internationally active development, production and sales company and an important supplier for ophthalmic surgical instruments with a dominant market share in the area of lens injection systems. Around twenty percent of the global demand for injection devices for intraocular lenses is supplied by the company based in Thal SG today . Other important manufacturers of ophthalmic surgical instruments are Alcon and Johnson & Johnson Vision Care .

Aravind

In 2007, as part of a partnership agreement, Hohl provided the Indian foundation Aravind , which operates eye clinics in India and Africa, with some of the know-how to make modern cataract surgery accessible to poorly paid patients in India . This cooperation with Aravind and the associated waiver of profit maximization ultimately also led to the fact that Hohl's company was sold to the Halma Group and he left the company in March 2014.
