Emil Thomas (Philologist)
Emil Thomas (born August 8, 1858 in Schroda , Posen Province ; † February 14, 1923 in Berlin ) was a German classical philologist .
Life
Emil Thomas, the son of the lawyer Boleslav Thomas and Elisa geb. Curlew, initially received private tuition and from 1868 attended the grammar school in Krotoschin , where his father was transferred that same year. After graduating in Easter 1876, Thomas studied classical philology, German , history and philosophy . He began his studies at the University of Leipzig , where he took part in the philological seminar under Justus Hermann Lipsius , the societas grammatica under Georg Curtius and the societas philosophica under Carl Göring . In the winter semester of 1876/77 he moved to Jena , where he attended the philological seminar for two semesters (under the direction of Erwin Rohde , Alfred von Gutschmid and Moriz Schmidt ) and attended paleographic exercises with Eduard Sievers .
In the winter semester of 1877/78, Thomas moved to the University of Bonn , which at that time was one of the most important places to study for ancient scholars thanks to the work of Professors Franz Bücheler and Hermann Usener . Thomas also entered the philological seminar there, as well as the Bonn Circle and the Philological Association . He attended Oscar-Umbrian language exercises with Bücheler. After two semesters, he changed his place of study for the last time and went to the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin . There he attended lectures and exercises in German philology with Karl Müllenhoff , in philosophy with Eduard Zeller , in epigraphy with Adolf Kirchhoff and in Latin philology with Johannes Vahlen . He was also in charge of Thomas' dissertation on Seneca the Elder , with which he was awarded a doctorate on May 31, 1880. phil. received his doctorate .
After completing his studies, Thomas first lived in Krotoschin, then in Breslau . In 1892 he completed his habilitation at the Berlin University of Classical Philology and has taught there since then as a private lecturer. In 1911 the Philosophical Faculty awarded him the title of professor. On behalf of the Prussian Academy of Sciences , Thomas contributed to the Kant- Gesamtausgabe, for which he edited the Latin scripts; he also edited the Metaphysica by Kant's contemporary Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten .
Thomas' research focus was the philosophy of antiquity, especially Aristotle and the younger Seneca . He published several essays and monographs on the textual criticism of their writings.
