Emil Weyr

Emil Weyr (born August 31, 1848 in Prague , † January 25, 1894 in Vienna ) was an Austrian mathematician who worked in the field of geometry .

Life

Emil was the son of Franz Weyr, who was born in Nachod in 1820 and from 1855 was a math teacher at a school in Prague; the other son was Eduard Weyr . He attended secondary school where his father taught and then studied from 1865 to 1868 at the Bohemian Polytechnic, where he received his doctorate in 1870 under Otto Wilhelm Fiedler. He then became a private lecturer at the Charles University in Prague and in 1875 a full professor at the University of Vienna .

Together with his brother, he was one of the leading representatives of the Austrian School of Geometry and contributed significantly to the spread of geometrical teaching in Austria. He published about 300 papers, including The Elements of Projective Geometry and On the Geometry of the Ancient Egyptians . Together with Gustav von Escherich , he founded the monthly magazine for mathematics and physics .

Honors

In 1888 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
