Emili Vendrell i Ibars (born January 23, 1893 in Barcelona ; † August 1, 1962 there ) was a Catalan singer ( tenor ).

life and work

Emili Vendrell began his musical education at the age of seven at the Escolania which Choralschola the Church of Santa Maria del Mar . He came from a simple family and initially worked as a bricklayer. In 1911 he joined the Orfeó Català and continued his musical training with Lluís Millet .

Emili Vendrell appeared as the choir soloist of Orfeó Català. In 1921 he played the role of the evangelist in the Spanish premiere of Bach's St. Matthew Passion in the Palau de la Música Catalana . He specialized on the one hand in the interpretation of oratorios and on the other hand in the repertoire of the Catalan art song. From 1922, he turned to music theater and played for the Teatre Català Liric Barcelo Neser Teatre Tívoli , among other pieces of Enrique Granados , Enric Morera and Antoni Nicolau . He became a member of the Teatre Apolo de València , with which he performed numerous zarzuelas . In 1923 he made his debut at the Teatro de la Zarzuela in Madrid and then toured South America, Italy, France and England. In 1936 he took part in the performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony as a soloist in the final chorale with the Orquestra Pau Casals at the Gran Teatre del Liceu . In 1953 he gave his stage farewell with Doña Francisquita at the Teatre Calderón de Barcelona .

Emili Vendrell won on the one hand by interpreting traditional Catalan-language songs such as Pel teu amor - Rosó ("For your love - Rosó", music: Josep Ribas, text: Miquel Poal i Aragall) or L'Emigrant ("The Emigrant", music: Amadeu Vives , text: Jacint Verdaguer ) was very popular. On the other hand, he gained an excellent reputation as an interpreter of Zarzuelas. He found his star roles in the works Doña Francisquita by Amadeu Vives and Cançó d'amor i de guerra (“The Song of Love and War”) by Rafael Martínez i Valls . He made several recordings. He published the autobiographical work El mestre Millet i jo: memòries (1953) and a method for singing (1955). His son Emili Vendrell i Coutier (* 1924, Emili Vendrell Junior), who was also trained as a singer and tenor, published the book El meu pare, Emili Vendrell ("My Father Emili Vendrell") together with Xavier Foz in 1966 .
