With his book Wirtschaften, Unternehmens, Ethik. The foundation and application of a socio-theoretical economic sociology , he was the founder of the socio- theoretical economic sociology , and with his book entitled Homo oeconomicus and the unfinished creation. Foundation and application of analytical business psychology Founder of the psychoanalytic approach in business psychology .

family

He was married to Ilona Murányi, with whom he had two children.

Studies and degrees

He graduated from the Budafok Citizens' School in Hungary with very good results and the Lajos Kossuth Business School in Budapest with excellent results. In the business school he was a student of the Kossuth Prize winner Miklós Szentkuthy . The writer distinguished the student with his friendship. This lasted until Szentkuthy's death. The intellectual greatness of the writer had a great influence on his scientific creativity after he lost his Hungarian literary career, which Szentkuthy had promised him, as a result of his escape from Hungary in 1956.

He completed his studies at the Business Education Faculty of the Corvinus University in Budapest (at that time Karl Marx Business University ) with an Absolutorium and later he did his doctorate here in Education with summa cum laude . He fled to Austria on November 6, 1956 because of journalistic work. At the University for World Trade in Vienna (now Vienna University of Economics and Business ), he learned German and acquired the previous knowledge that was required for taking the teaching examination for middle and higher commercial schools.

He passed the examination before the Austrian Teaching Examination Commission, and thus also earned the title of Magister . He then enrolled at the Faculty of Social and Economic Sciences at the University of Graz , and completed his studies in business administration with a master's degree. He then studied sociology there and received his doctorate in this subject. He achieved the title of Doctor Habilitatus with the qualification one hundred percent.

His early years

In middle school and during his student days, he relied on scholarships and the support of his teachers. He worked in the Hutera brick factory in Törökbálint as a laborer, in the Budapest tool and machine factory in payroll accounting , and on the racecourse as a profit-paying cashier. At the request of the TIT (Tudományos Ismeretterjesztő Társulat) he gave lectures in companies in Budapest and the surrounding area. After almost half a century, he returned to this highly respected association as the author of numerous studies that appeared in their scientific journal Valóság (Reality).

At the end of the forties and the beginning of the fifties he was a pawn scout youth group leader in the Blessed Asztrikt-Abbot Boy Scout Association and secretary of the Catholic youth organization in District IV in Budafok. He took part in the demonstrations for Cardinal Mindszenti and was under observation by the communist state police .

In the school year 1955/56 he taught at the business school in Sopron , and with the support of the city council, he organized the reappearance of the then discontinued Soproni Napló newspaper. At the time, journalism was under tight control of the Communist Party . The committee of this party in Raab (Győr) excluded him from the editorial office. Only after the outbreak of the Hungarian popular uprising did he get a chance. His journalistic activity was the reason for his flight to Austria . He fled together with the professors and students of the then university. Forty years later he returned to Sopron as a university professor from Corvinus University in Budapest , where he has been teaching since 1991.

In emigration 1956–1991

In November 1956, the Hungarian refugee children were walking aimlessly in the neglected courtyard of the bombed-out former barracks without windows in Traiskirchen in Lower Austria . He went to the camp manager and told him that these children are lost if they are not regularly employed. He asked him to look for a competent contact person on this matter. Soon afterwards, the Austrian Minister of Education, Heinrich Drimmel, called in and had him taken to his office in Vienna in a company car. The minister commissioned him to organize a school for Hungarian refugee children. In this sense, he got the parents' declarations of consent that they were ready to leave their children in the care of the planned school, created the organizational plan including the timetable and the list of names of the students and teachers. Initially, there was no religion teacher available. He was able to find a pastor at the last moment, before the buses loaded with children left the barracks yard in the direction of Obertraun in Upper Austria - in the direction of the planned location of the school. Once there, the representative of the minister informed the assembled students and teachers that he had been entrusted with the management of the school. His tenure did not last long.

The religion teacher believed that a teacher who had acquired his knowledge at Karl Marx University in Budapest can only be a communist and is unsuitable as a teacher. The priest took over the management of the school, gave him five hundred schillings and put him on a train to Vienna.

After a difficult, restless time, he came to the Schwechat Castle Altkettenhof, adapted for the Hungarian intellectual refugees . He stayed here for five years. He studied with Rockefeller for a year and then with an Anna Kéthly scholarship. In the meantime he was a self-employed entrepreneur for a time and sought to acquire at least two years of practical experience in business life, which was prescribed for the business educators in Austria at that time.

On the banks of the Old Danube in Vienna (Elidagesse 10) he rented a run-down house and renovated it himself. In 1962 the house was ready. He didn't live here long. After passing the teaching examination, he applied for the advertised subsidy teaching position of the Republic of Austria at the municipal business school in the university town of Leoben and moved there. At the school, the faculty elected him first teaching representative, and in 1976 he was appointed director of the school. He held this office until 1991.

At the end of the 1980s, the communist system gradually came to an end. Hungary needed support from the west. As there was no experience of western-style society, the Hungarians gladly accepted any help. He organized Hungarian study trips to Austria. The central organ of the Hungarian communities "Komunitas" in Budapest, under the leadership of the director Zoltán Pálfalvy, took over the organization on the part of the Hungarians. The management of the city of Leoben stood by the guests. They were happy to provide insights into the city administration system, including road construction, energy, water supply, and the city's funeral system. Menyhay tried to extend these contacts to higher education. These came about in 1991 with the assistance of the Section Head of the Hungarian Ministry of Education and Teaching, Stefan Bakos. As a result, the professors at the University of Commerce, Hospitality and Tourism have elected him visiting professor. Further invitations followed. The leading professors of the University of Commerce, Hospitality and Tourism, under the direction of Rector Miklos Horn, later under the direction of his successor, Rector László Csizmadia, visited Austria, Leoben and Vienna several times on study and contact trips competent minister.

In 1992, the Hungarian Rectors' Conference of the Universities and Colleges of Business Education held its meeting in Leoben, which was relocated to Austria, as its guest, and the guest of the city of Leoben and the Montan University. There was also a joint meeting with the management staff of the Montan University Leoben . The rector of the Budapest University of Economics, Rudolf Andorka, gave a lecture on the way in which the political upheavals affect the Hungarian higher education system.

During his time as director, he also taught at the Montan University in Leoben (1983–1991) and continued his studies at the University of Graz . At the same time he worked as a sworn judicial expert and journalist. At the Grazer Wochenpost he had his own column (reflections) and wrote around 600 articles critical of economy, culture and society. During this period he published three scientific books.

  11. The reasons for the extraordinarily quick reaction can be found in the files of the Austrian State Archives. On the 11th page of the relevant summary, among other things, the following can be read: ”However, by far not all and often the most important files of the Federal Ministry for Education on the question of Hungarian (secondary) schools are not succumbing to the signature“ 13B1-M.Sch . ". This includes an act concerning the acquisition of teaching and office material for the Hungarian refugee middle school Obertraun 69. The act reveals that the establishment of the same was decided at a meeting that took place on November 6, 1956 under the chairmanship of the Federal Minister. " From this it can be seen that the Austrian Federal Government had already dealt with the problem of educational care for the Hungarian refugee children before Emmerich Menyhay's initiative and that Emmerich Menyhay's initiative was justified.
